The Unofficial Theme of the 2019 Met Gala Was Definitely "Cher"

She may not have been the first to wear lingerie, feathers or 40 pounds of sequins on the red carpet, but Cher damn well perfected all of those looks. She is, in so many ways, the true Queen of Camp, and as such, multiple celebrities showed up at this year's Met Gala in outfits that paid homage to the superstar. (Not only that, but she was also selected as the musical performer of the evening, and so presumably got to see and enjoy all the ensembles inspired by her epic career.)

From over-the-top headdresses to midriff-baring gowns—and even a nod to the beginning of her career in the '60s—these are all the stars that embraced the alternative theme of the evening: Cher.

Elaborate headwear + slinky sequins + lots of skin = the Cher fashion starter pack.

Props to Jenner and Atelier Versace for finding a way to make Cher's iconic feathered headdress a bit more wearable.

The tag may say “Dundas” but the look screams “Cher in Bob Mackie at the '86 Oscars.”

That hair! Those flowers! We love Saldana's nod to the singer's early days.

We've got you, babe. And by "got you" we clearly mean "understand your reference to '70s-era Cher." Duh.

Every element of this barely-there ensemble could have been pulled straight from one of Cher's concert tours.

This after-party look was literally inspired by one of Cher's 2017 performance ensembles.

Half Diana Ross, half Cher, all fierce as can be.

There is a particular thrill we get when we see one of our ultimate idols pay tribute to another one of our ultimate idols. So thank you, Celine Dion, for proving both that our hearts will go on and that there is life after love the most over-the-top red carpet of all time.
