Carole Middleton Gives Off Total Diana Vibes in #TBT Posted by Kate

Flashback to the early 1980s, when Princess Diana had very recently married Prince Charles in July 1981. Overnight, she became a style icon, famous for her fashion, but also for her ever-iconic ‘Diana bob’ (side-swept bangs, hitting just past her cheekbones, a little longer in the back).

Well, it turns out that we weren’t the only ones feeling influenced at the hair salon by Diana. In a #TBT of Carole Middleton, posted by her daughter Kate and Prince William in honor of Mother’s Day this past Sunday in the U.K., it’s hard not to see the resemblance between Carole and Di way back when.

The photo—second in the gallery and captioned by @KensingtonRoyal to read, “Celebrating two other special mothers today”—shows Kate, likely one to two years old, tightly gripping her mum Carole’s finger as the pair strolls together in a park. A sweet mother-daughter photo, of course, but my co-host of the Royally Obsessed podcast Roberta Fiorito and I couldn’t help but notice another striking detail: Was Carole sporting the ‘Diana bob’?

“The dress feels very Diana, the Peter Pan collar feels very Diana, but the hair! It makes sense because it was the style back then, but fascinating to think she was taking her cue from Diana,” we discuss during the show.

Hard to say if Carole was intentionally copying Diana as a fan of her style or simply keeping up with whatever was in vogue at the time. Either way, Carole—in all her 1980s glory—wears the look quite well.

If only she’d had a crystal ball to predict what her royal future (hairstyles and all) would hold.
