Remember that viral photo of Reese Witherspoon (Madeline) hurling an ice cream cone at Meryl Streep (Mary Louise) on the set of Big Little Lies? Well, you might be disappointed to know the scene was cut from last night’s episode.
Season two, episode five of BLL aired on HBO last night, and many fans were shocked when a confrontation between Madeline and Mary Louise didn’t escalate to the infamous throw.
It all started toward the end of the episode when Madeline and her daughter, Abigail (Kathryn Newton), run into Mary Louise. When Mary Louise purposely refers to Abigail as Madeline’s college-bound daughter, Madeline interrupts and calls Mary Louise “indecent” for trying to take Celeste’s (Nicole Kidman) kids, which prompts Mary Louise to quickly excuse herself.
The problem? Madeline was supposed to throw her ice cream cone at Mary Louise’s back, but the scene was sadly cut from the episode. Womp, womp.
Nevertheless, Streep recently sat down for an interview with Entertainment Tonight and revealed that fans will still get a chance to witness the iconic moment. “[Reese] just told me it’s not in the show!” she said. “It’s [going to be] in the DVD extras.”
Although we’ll have to wait until the full season comes out on DVD, Witherspoon confirmed that the confrontation was one for the books. “It was intimidating for sure. I had to, like, sometimes pull myself back and take a deep breath and go, ‘OK, she’s just a person, she’s just a human being,’” she said. “But it was a thrill.”
Way to go, HBO.
