Side by side shots of TempurBreeze mattresses.
TEMPUR-Pedic

We swear we’re all after more sleep. And while others look inward—perhaps it’s our caffeine intake, cortisone level or too much night cheese—some of us are looking under. Namely, at our mattresses. After all, we spend at least one-third of our lives sleeping or attempting to do so, so why not invest in training wheels? In this case, we’re hoping that assistance comes in the form of TEMPUR-Pedic’s newest offerings: the TEMPUR-Breeze models.

The brand, born from NASA experiments to create a material that would absorb more G-force, is no doubt an industry leader in adaptive (aka extra comfy) yet supportive (see: the bed won’t eat you alive) proprietary bedding materials. Sometimes confused with memory foam, staunch TEMPUR-Heads will dutifully remind you that plain-old memory foam is no match for TEMPUR-Material. On memory foam, you sink. On TEMPUR-Material, you float (or at least that’s the promise).

So when the TEMPUR-Breeze line hit the market, promising to resolve one of our biggest sleep qualms (the night sweats), the zzz chasers at PureWow had to test the mattresses out. The line consists of two beds: The ProBreeze (from $4,099) and the LuxeBreeze (from $5,099).

What’s the Difference Between the TEMPUR-Breeze ProBreeze and the LuxeBreeze?

Obviously, there’s the $1,000 price difference. According to the brand, the LuxeBreeze offers 10 degrees of cooling compared to the ProBreeze’s 5 degrees. That 5-degree differential is based on the cooling systems. Both mattresses have cool-to-the-touch covers, a heat-diffusing layer, a layer that pulls heat away from your body and a ventilated layer to increase airflow. The main difference is in that third layer meant to pull heat away from the body. The ProBreeze has Pure Cool Material, the LuxeBreeze uses Pure Cool Plus Material—in case that sentence gave you a headache, that extra “Plus” in the LuxeBreeze, is brand-speak for newer, “better” cooling tech. The LuxeBreeze also has significantly more coils in its bottom layer, which may provide more stability. But is it actually worth more? Our testers investigate.

Meet the Testers

Dara Katz is an executive editor at PureWow. She shares her bed with a perpetually hot, air-conditioning-blasting husband, small dog and sometimes, mischievous toddler. In addition to this, she’s pregnant with lower back pain and looking for a mattress that supports her spine as she rolls from side to side 4,000 times a night.

Olivia Dubyak is a commerce editor at PureWow. Dubyak is a hot sleeper, is currently pregnant and previously injured her back and needs a bed that cools, supports and is firm but still has a touch of plushness.

How We Tested the Mattresses

Katz tested the TEMPUR-Pedic LuxeBreeze in medium-hybrid firmness. Dubyak tested the TEMPUR-Pedic ProBreeze in a medium-hybrid firmness. Both editors, being pregnant, opted for the medium-hybrid option (as opposed to the traditional TEMPUR-Pedic) in hopes of finding ample bounce and support to move and get in and out of the bed with a big helping of that Temper-Pedic zero-gravity feel. Since Dubyak has tested six mattresses in the last few years, she knew what questions they should ask over their three-month trial period: Does it align my spine while I sleep? Is there any motion transfer when my husband or I move? Is it cooling? Do the edges show signs of rolling? And of course, is it comfortable? Both testers embarked on their 90 nights of sleep with their two different models and reported back.

I’ll start with the elephant in the room—and the only reason I docked points from my review—the price. The mattress I tested—king-sized, medium hybrid, LuxeBreeze—costs $6,299. No doubt, this is a splurge, but if you’re willing to foot the bill, it might be one that’s truly worth it.

Prior to the LuxeBreeze, I slept on a TEMPUR-Pedic medium hybrid. We loved it! But when we moved into a bigger home, and had the option for a king-size bed, an upgrade was mandatory. Right off the bat, the size jump was sleep-changing. While the TEMPUR-Breeze hybrid mattresses promise motion canceling—as in, your sleep partner isn’t awoken by your tossing and turning—I’m sure the additional wiggle room on the bed helps in this category. That said, over my 90-day trial period, I have no complaints about my husband’s sleep patterns interrupting my sleep patterns, or vice versa. When I sleep on this mattress, I’m in my own world, floating on a cloud.

Speaking of clouds, when friends have asked me how the medium hybrid LuxeBreeze sleeps, I’ve answered: “It feels like…nothing.” A good night on this mattress is like the absence of a mattress. I’m not thinking about any mattress because I feel simultaneously weightless and supported, likely thanks to the “happy medium” that is the medium hybrid design, which “combines innovative coil technology with one-of-a-kind TEMPUR-Material™ to deliver unmatched pressure relief and motion cancellation.” It’s a big promise, but it delivers on it.

But what makes this mattress worth its price tag is the cooling element. We’ve used cooling products like mattress toppers and pillows before, but to no great avail. Come summer, you can find my husband blasting the AC to arctic temperature while relinquishing all bedding to me as I burrowed away from the cold. Lately, though, I’ve noticed my husband snoozing while cocooned under our comforter like a cozy little caterpillar. It’s so funny to me because I've literally never seen him cuddled up with the bedding. All this to say: the cooling element works. The LuxeBreeze is marketed with a 10-degree cooler promise. And by George, does she live up to the promise. The mattress is not only miraculously cold to the touch, but it actually stays cool for as long as you’re in it. Apparently, we can thank the brand’s “enhanced version of our exclusive and innovative Pure Cool® material, our Pure Cool® Plus material,” which is designed to pull heat away from the body.

The negatives of the mattress? Beyond the price, its size was worrisome. Let’s just say I ran to the ATM to get more cash when I saw just how bulky (it’s got a 13-inch profile) the mattress was compared to the two delivery men. Multiply all that by three flights of winding stairs and I wasn’t sure the bed would ever make it up to the bedroom. Low and behold: they succeeded. And so did my husband and father in applying our mattress protector (as mentioned, we sleep with a senior dog and sometimes a toddler), not without effort though. But you should note: You don’t have to rotate the mattress!

  • Pros: cooling tech that actually works, gravity-less feeling plus spring support, available in 3 firmness levels, little motion transfer, no need to rotate, 10-year warranty
  • Cons: hefty price tag, very heavy to lift, strong smell first couple of nights, have to schedule delivery times, not floor- or box spring-compatible
  • Who It’s Best For: hot sleepers, people with back pain, pregnant people, couples with different sleep needs
  • Size: King
  • Material:  four layers to cool and relieve bodily stress/assist with alignment, including TEMPUR-ES™ material, plus 1,300 premium spring coils in the base layer
  • Delivery: white-glove delivery in mattress cover; was set up by delivery drivers who also removed my old mattress
  • Return Policy: 90-night trial, refunds, exchanges and returns are addressed by the brand when concerns are brought to them in addition to a 10-year warranty

TEMPUR-Pedic TEMPUR-Breeze ProBreeze Mattress Review

Tempur-Pedic

  • Value: 20/20
  • Quality: 20/20
  • Comfort & Support: 20/20
  • Good Nights’ Sleep: 19/20
  • Cooling Factor: 19/20

I’ve been sleeping on my TEMPUR-Pedic ProBreeze for about three months now, and it’s been, in a word, dreamy. I’m used to boxed-mattress deliveries, which are usually great, but there’s something about a mattress being delivered flat, without having been contorted to fit in a box that makes me think it’s a better option if you’re looking to invest in a mattress that lasts.

The ProBreeze medium-hybrid firmness is firmer than I expected it to be, which turned out to be a positive. I usually opt for mattresses that have a plush-to-medium density, and when this one turned out to be a little firmer than I thought, I worried it would feel too hard for my liking. Luckily, that extra firmness seemed to be just what I was missing, because the way the bed contours to my body, keeping my spine aligned, is like no other. I always feel cradled, and now that I have a pregnancy pillow on the bed for extra belly support, they both work to keep my body comfortable throughout the night.

I always go for a cooling mattress, but none have been able to really keep me chilled like this one, and my husband agrees. The top of the mattress has the brand’s SmartClimate cover, which has cooling fibers that are very cool to the touch. There’s also a cooling layer that helps dissipate your body heat. I’ve noticed that I can still feel that top cooling layer even through my sheets, which makes this cooling mattress stand out from others I’ve tried. I’m a very hot sleeper (especially while pregnant) and to me, this mattress always feels like the other side of the pillow.

Considering the technology used in the construction of the mattress for support and cooling, the $5,000+ price tag is justified, in my opinion. Mattresses are investment pieces, especially if you want them to last for years down the road. The mattress comes with a 10-year warranty to cover certain damages. That said, it’s worth really paying attention to what you like and don’t like within that 90-night trial period to make sure it’s a bed you’ll love for years to come. After my trial ran up, I knew I made the right choice.

  • Pros: genuinely keeps you cool, even in mid-summer; very supportive, cocooning feeling
  • Cons: comes firmer than you’d expect, pricier than boxed mattresses, have to schedule delivery times
  • Who It’s Best For: anyone who requires a bit of extra support while sleeping
  • Size: King
  • Material: four layers to cool and relieve bodily stress/assist with alignment, including TEMPUR-ES™ material, plus 1,000 spring coils in the base layer
  • Delivery: white-glove delivery in mattress cover; was set up by delivery drivers who also removed my old mattress

The Final Verdict

Both TEMPUR-Breeze mattresses delivered on their cooling technology, a major feat considering all the cool nights we’ve been promised in the past didn’t live up to the hype. In the base of the LuxeBreeze and the ProBreeze, the hype is legit. Now, as to whether the Luxe really provides that extra 5 degrees is hard to quantify.

Both testers opted for medium hybrid firmness. While Katz felt like she was floating, Dubyak was initially surprised at the firmness, but was ultimately happy with her decision as it provided more support.

And the price: It always comes back to that big price tag. There’s no getting around it. Both mattresses cost a pretty penny. But considering they deliver on their promise, offering good nights’ sleep, comfort and support even during their pregnancies, they both found the beds worthy investments. That said, if you want to save $1,000, maybe go with the ProBreeze.
