How to Make a Papier-Mâché Bowl with Your Kids

Of course, every craft your kid makes is museum worthy, but once in a while it’s nice to make something that can serve more purpose than just bedazzling the refrigerator. Next time your child is in the mood to craft, try this papier-mâché bowl that really puts the fun in functional.

What You Need:

  • A balloon
  • Newspaper strips
  • Mod Podge
  • A paintbrush or sponge
  • A safety pin
  • Paint for decorating (optional)

How to Make a Papier-Mâché Bowl

Step 1: Inflate the balloon and secure it with a knot.

Step 2: Brush Mod Podge onto one side of the newspaper strips and place them on the bottom half of the balloon (opposite side of the knot). Continue to add newspaper and Mod Podge, smoothing as you go, until half of the balloon is entirely covered.

Step 3: Let the balloon sit overnight or until completely dry.

Step 4: Pop the balloon with a safety pin and pull any remaining rubber out of your papier-mâché bowl.

Step 5: Trim the edges to create a cleaner rim.

Step 6: Paint or decorate your papier-mâché bowl in whatever way you’d like. Let dry again, then fill to the brim with delicious treats. After all that hard work, you’ve definitely earned them.
