There are a few things we’re willing to splurge on, and mattresses are at the top of the list. From high-quality materials to edge support that won’t roll overtime, there are a million things to look for in a solid mattress. That’s why we enlisted two testers to try out the Halcyon Azure mattress from Naturepedic, a brand known for creating cozy mattresses that are made to last and that are also completely organic.

So, did our testers, who are different kind of sleepers who share the same bed, find that it was worth the price tag ($7,999 for a king)? First, some background: The Halcyon collection from Naturepedic is the brand’s luxury line. The certified-organic, handcrafted beds are made of organic cotton, latex, a cashmere-alpaca blend quilt topper and the internal coils are even encased in organic cotton, too.

How We Tested the Naturepedic Mattress

The two have been testing the mattress for two months and have developed quite a liking for the bed’s comfort and construction. They’re both hot sleepers, so they were really invested in getting a feel for if the cooling properties the brand claims are up to par as well. As for firmness level, one tester prefers a softer to medium level of firmness, while the other likes a fully firm, harder feel. They were able to customize their order to get a split firmness to align with both of their preferences.

What We Looked for While Testing the Mattress

During their time testing, they considered the firmness, quality of materials, shipping and returns, cooling properties, value and edge support of the perimeter of the mattress. Keeping these points in mind, it was easy for the two to decide if the mattress is worth the hefty price.

So, How’s the Construction of the Bed?

The couple definitely appreciate the organic properties of the bed, which is a reason the brand caught their eye in the first place. One tester wakes up at least once a night to go to the bathroom, so having a comfortable, inviting bed to crawl back into and easily fall back asleep is very important. The pillowtop feel adds a little cushiness to the material, and even though one side is fully firm, our tester reports that it helps contour to her body to support her, which she finds especially comfortable as a side sleeper. One thing the couple agrees that they don’t love about the bed is the height. They wish the mattress itself was a little thicker, as it sits lower on their bed than their previous mattress. The bed has a 10-inch profile, so it’s not meant to sit super high up on your frame, which may not be a great pick for everyone.

The organic wool aspect of the bed contributes to the brand’s claims that it will keep you cool and wick sweat as you sleep. And according to the couple, they do feel less hot throughout the night on this bed. Plus, the latex is great for breathability, too. As far as any rolling of the edges, our testers haven’t noticed any early signs of problems, and say that the structure of the bed is very firm, and even though the pillowtop has softer edges, they don’t detect any rolling or sagging.

How’s the Shipping and Delivery Process?

Ground shipping is always free for U.S customers and the brand ships orders within two to four business days. Naturepedic offers freight curbside delivery, meaning a freight company will typically call to schedule a time frame for delivery, at which point the driver will remove the package from the truck and leave it on the curb. Getting the box into your house or apartment and setting up the mattress is the buyer’s responsibility, so you may want to enlist a few friends and family members to help move your new bed in.

As for returns, the brand offers a 100-night free trial so you can fully test your bed to make sure it’s right for you. The returns and exchange policy for different models can vary a bit, so check out the website’s explanations for more specifics.

Overall Thoughts

Overall, our testers say the sleeping experience has been wonderful, and they’ve been sleeping more comfortably and waking up in the mornings feeling better and more rejuvenated. The only real snag was the delivery process, as they weren’t thrilled with the lack of in-home delivery, but based on the quality of the mattress, they’re confident that while a Naturepedic bed is very pricey, it’s worth the cost—and the extra work you have to put in to get it all set up. The Halcyon models are available to view online, but to customize and order your new mattress you’ll have to find a store near you to shop in-person (but can order and customize all of the other Naturepedic beds online, starting at $1,399).
