I have never been a great sleeper. I toss and turn and wake up multiple times with night sweats. Come morning, I’m still tired and left with lower back pain. So when I had the chance to test out Cocoon by Sealy's The Chill Hybrid mattress (from $839; $539), which is designed to keep you both cool *and* comfortable all night, I jumped on it. The hybrid foam/spring mattress has earned thousands of 5-star reviews from buyers and multiple awards, so I felt pretty confident in my choice, but I put it to the test over two months to get you the full scoop—and spoiler, I'm very happy with it. Below, my detailed and honest review. And psst: the mattress is on sale RN.

How Is the Cocoon by Sealy The Chill Hybrid Mattress Designed for Comfort and Cooling?

Before I get into my own thoughts on the mattress, there's some need-to-know info on its design. First off, it’s a hybrid design mattress. Basically, this means it’s a combination of memory foam and springs, so you're getting more support and height in the mattress than you would with one made from only memory foam, per the brand. The coil springs are intended to reduce motion transfer, while also increasing support and airflow to keep you feeling both comfy and cool through the night, and the memory foam layer helps relieve pressure and conforms to your body.

The mattress is also outfitted with the brand's advanced cooling technology embedded in the outer cover layer of the mattress and is infused with a "phase change material" that's intended to absorb and dissipate heat. Along with this, the mattress is described as a "happy medium" between soft and firm, leaning slightly towards the firm side, and it's available in sizes twin, twin XL, full, queen, king and California king.

My Experience Setting Up the Cocoon by Sealy The Chill Hybrid Mattress

Since it’s a box mattress, it’s delivered via UPS, which means you won’t be receiving that white-glove delivery where they set it up and take your old mattress away. Not the most ideal situation for someone living alone. Knowing this ahead of time, I arranged to have my old mattress picked up before I got to unboxing. Unpacking tip: Make sure the mattress is positioned ideally to slide onto your bed frame before you release it from the shrink wrap. That said, I was successfully able to set it up on my own (pat on the back).

And My Experience Sleeping on It

As for actually sleeping on the Chill Hybrid mattress, this came much easier. I was happy to find that Cocoon by Sealy's “perfect blend of soft and firm” description was pretty accurate. I can sleep on it through the night (and, OK, spend my first few hours of the day) in it without feeling like I'm sinking in. I've also noticed my lower back pain has definitely lessened since I made the switch, which honestly, makes it worth it entirely.

But when it comes to cooling, don't expect any miracles here. The Chill Hybrid mattress feels slightly cooler than other mattresses I've had in the past, but in my experience, how hot I get through the night depends more on which sheets and other bedding I'm using (my current fave to keep me sweat-free for summer is this Quince organic sheet set). Overall, though, my sleep quality (along with the condition of my body when I wake up) has definitely improved with the Chill Hybrid.

Is the Cocoon by Sealy The Chill Hybrid Mattress Worth It?

All things considered (including the 35 percent discount you can currently score on the mattress that saves you up to $600), I think the Chill Hybrid mattress is definitely worth it. If you're looking for a hybrid mattress with cooling technology at a price point that won’t make you short circuit, this could definitely be the match for you—so add to cart while the deal is still live. As for me? I'll be comfortably catching some zzz's.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Cocoon by Sealy The Chill Hybrid Mattress Need a Box Spring?

No, this mattress doesn't need a box spring and, in fact, the brand recommends avoiding pairing it with one. Cocoon by Sealy suggests placing The Chill mattress on a power base, flat foundation or slatted platform bed.

What Kind of Sleeper is The Cocoon by Sealy The Chill Hybrid Mattress Good For?

Personally, I sleep on both my side and back, both of which I found to be comfortable using the Chill Hybrid mattress. It may be a good option for stomach sleepers, too, since it has medium/firm support.
