We’re longtime fans of Jennifer Garner’s Pretend Cooking Show. For the uninitiated, it’s an unofficial Instagram video series where she casually cooks everything from her grandma’s cornbread to gingersnaps. For the latest installment, where she makes cacio e pepe eggs, she invited a very special guest: the one and only Ina Garten.
Jennifer Garner and Ina Garten Made Cacio e Pepe Scrambled Eggs (and It Was So Wholesome)
Two faves, one breakfast
“Happy birthday to my Queen, my friend, and my Cooking Fairy @inagarten,” Garner captioned the video. “Making a Pretend Cooking Show with the Contessa who inspired it was meta for my brain. I always love meeting up with you, Ina, especially for our very special, to-be-seen-in-2024 get-together in your beautiful barn.”
The recipe for cacio e pepe eggs is from one of Garten’s cookbooks, Go-To Dinners. It only requires six ingredients, and we’re betting you have most of them in your kitchen right now. The trick to their drool-worthy, custardy texture is cooking them low and slow, stirring occasionally until the eggs start to clump.
“Nice and hot,” Garner says, turning up the heat under a skillet. It’s then that Ina magically appears, saying “excuse me, nice and low; cook scrambled eggs really low,” and turning the heat down. “My own personal cooking fairy just showed up!” says Garner with a smile.
After the big reveal, they begin preparing the eggs together. “Remember, the pecorino is really salty, so you don’t want to add too much [salt],” advises the Queen of Chambray.
Another game-changing tip of hers? “I turn off the heat for a minute when it’s just about there…I think a lot of people cook them fully and then what happens is, you walk away to get the plates and it’s overcooked.” Good looking out, Ina.
