Psst: Did you hear that IHOP is offering its House Faves menu through March 31? Available at most locations every Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., it features four breakfast options starting at $6 each ($7 at select locations), so you can satisfy your hankering for pancakes, bacon and the like on a budget. But how much of a bargain is the value deal, really? I, a food editor, visited the 101 South 69th St. location in Upper Darby, P.A. to find out. Read on for my honest reviews and ranking.
IHOP’s House Faves Menu Offers $6 Breakfast—Here’s a Food Editor’s Review of All 4 Options
Breakfast for dinner, anyone?
- What It Is: one slice French toast with two bacon strips or pork sausage links and two eggs
- Price: $7
I loved the vanilla-kissed, nutmeg-forward flavor of the French toast, but I thought it could have used more batter and another minute or two on the grill. It wasn’t bad by any means; I just felt like the pancakes are much more worth it in terms of quantity and quality. As for the customizable sides, I’m a longtime stan of IHOP’s soft scrambled eggs, which are superbly fluffy and buttery every damn time. I ordered bacon with this one, which was equal parts chewy and crispy. (I usually order it well done because I like that ever-so-slightly burnt taste and extra crunch—but that’s just me.)
3. House Scramble with Hash Browns
- What It Is: eggs scrambled with chopped hickory-smoked bacon, jack cheese and cheddar cheese; served with crispy hash browns
- Price: $7
As I mentioned, I love a soft scramble and extra crispy bacon. So, I found the eggs a bit hard (although they were still moist) and the bacon a bit limp for my liking. That said, the hash browns were literally flawless. I’ve been known to ask for them well done at IHOP (and drench them in hot sauce), but they were stunningly crisp without any special requests.
- What It Is: omelet stuffed with ham, jack cheese and cheddar cheese, topped with white cheese sauce and served with two buttermilk pancakes
- Price: $7
Since I’m notoriously indecisive when it comes to choosing between sweet and savory breakfasts, I usually lean towards a combo that delivers both over an omelet…but this House Faves pick was surprisingly tasty. The eggs were fluffy and sturdy without being overcooked. The omelet’s flavor was balanced and decadent, but not excessively cheesy. It was also rolled instead of stuffed, so the simplicity of the egg really shone. I’m pretty sure mine came without the white cheese sauce on top, but I wasn’t mad about it.
1. Breakfast Faves Combo (2x2x2)
- What It Is: two buttermilk pancakes, two eggs and two bacon strips or pork sausage links
- Price: $7
In my humble opinion, you can never go wrong with a combo. I asked for the eggs sunny side-up and for sausage instead of bacon (it’s pleasantly herbaceous and has a soft, meaty texture with minimal snap). Despite a tiny piece of shell in the egg, the pancakes stole the show—no surprise there, it’s in the name. They’re reliably delicious, fluffy yet tacky and relatively savory on their own. I tend to go heavy on the butter and light on the syrup, but however you dress your pancakes up, you’re seriously missing out if you don’t try the butter pecan syrup.
