There’s nothing worse than picking out what you think is a perfectly ripe avocado only to slice into it and discover nasty traces of brown. This trick will guarantee a green one every single time.
What you do: Instead of pressing your fingers into the peel, lift up the stem enough to see the color underneath. If it’s green, you’ve got a ripe one--it's ready to eat! If it’s brown, it’s old and is most likely chock-full of brown spots.
But what if I can’t lift the stem at all? That just means the avocado isn’t ripe quite yet. (You can still buy it--just spot-check the stem to know the right time to slice it in two.)
It’s not easy being green. Actually, it is.
