Wait, Why Is Everyone Adding Mushrooms to Their Coffee?

We’re no strangers to coffee. Hell, it probably makes up 30 percent of our body composition at almost all times. What we were strangers to was coffee with…mushrooms.

But that’s exactly what Finnish company Four Sigmatic is selling—and we’re buying.

When we first heard about the brand’s Mushroom Coffee with Lion’s Mane and Chaga, we were, in a word, confused. Why would anyone mess with our lifeblood like this? we thought. Then we tried it. Here’s the deal:

First things first: How does it taste? Great. Despite the fact that it comes in little, individual serving-size packets, it tastes way better than instant coffee normally does. It’s got a slightly nutty flavor, which is amplified (in a good way) when paired with a splash of almond or cashew milk.

Why would I drink coffee with mushrooms? Four Sigmatic claims it can boost your brain power, increase productivity and reduce stress. It’s got all of the benefits of a regular cup of joe plus additional nutrients and minerals not found in regular coffee. Lion’s mane and chaga contain adaptogens, which protect the body from the effects of stress, and chaga mushrooms, specifically, have been touted for their ability to support digestive health and ward off bacteria and viruses.

Anything else? One more thing: Each cup contains 40 milligrams of caffeine, which is about half of what’s found in a standard coffee. But the company recommends drinking two cups a day, which evens it all out.

Now to get our hands on a packet of the mushroom hot chocolate…
