I’m not always a fan of capsule wardrobes, but one place where I think they can work wonders and truly free your mind from the stress of getting dressed every day is at the office. A work capsule wardrobe, especially for those who work in more conservative fields like lawyers, HR reps or financial advisors, can ensure you always look professional without requiring too much thought or effort. Which is precisely why I (along with a handful of experts) have put together a list of the only seven items you need to build a polished, office-appropriate capsule wardrobe—so you can kick off your work week looking and feeling like your best self.

Meet the Experts

  • Heather Gruccio is the SVP of Merchandising at Ann Taylor and has worked in fashion for over 20 years.
  • Alexa Glew is a Stitch Fix Stylist dedicated to helping women build wardrobes they’ll truly love to wear, for any occasion.

How I Chose the Pieces of This Work Capsule Wardrobe

As a fashion editor, my definition of what is “office appropriate” is vastly different from most people. Which is why I pulled in a team of experts to help me narrow down the list of must-have items while always maintaining a sense of posh professionalism. As with any capsule wardrobe list, these are suggestions, not rules. So if you’re more of a skirt or dress person, feel free to swap that pantsuit for a blazer and pencil or A-line skirt instead. The same is true for determining whether you want to invest in all black or navy, or feel it’s fine to add in some brighter hues or patterns. You know your company’s expectations best.

How to Build a Handbag Capsule Wardrobe for Any and All Occasions

1. Straight- or Wide-Leg Trousers

“The foundation of a versatile work wardrobe is well-made, tailored sportswear pieces in modern silhouettes, such as a great pair of wide-leg or flare trousers,” explains Gruccio. These specific silhouettes fall within that Goldilocks level of volume (not too wide, not too fitted) and have a timeless appeal that can more easily mix and match with a variety of tops. Per Glew, “Wide-leg bottoms, which have seen a 40 percent year-over-year increase in Stitch Fix client searches, are a perfect blend of comfort and chic for the office.” The best versions of these pants are made with materials that work for all seasons and that won’t wrinkle super-easily. And while black, navy and gray are definitely the most classic color choices, you could also toy with a dark green or burgundy hue if your office allows.

2. Classic Blazers

The classic partner in crime to match with a pair of trousers, a good blazer is considered by many to be a capsule wardrobe staple, no matter what type of office you work in. In this instance, Gruccio recommends looking for something that matches your trousers (or skirts) without too much fussy detail. You definitely have wiggle room to play around with shorter or longer cuts or double- vs. single-breasted silhouettes, just be sure it can pair back to multiple bottoms or dresses in your wardrobe to really maximize use.

3. Pointy-Toe Heels or Flats

“A classic pump with a pointy-toe compliments every pant leg shape, particularly full-length pants which are really having a moment,” notes Gruccio. But, of course, a flat or kitten heel is just as flattering for those who don’t like high heels. This is one area in which you can break away from neutral tones (though they are always good to have on hand) to add a pop of color if you like.

4. Sensible-Yet-Chic Footwear

For days when you want to shake things up from a pointed toe, Glew recommends investing in a few other pairs of shoes “like loafers or block-heeled ankle boots.” These shoes should be comfortable, yes, but avoid trendy dad sneakers or retro Adidas unless you know that your office is open to such styles. At best you’ll look pretty casual, and at worst you’ll look like an ‘80s parody.

5. Lightweight Knits

Gruccio is a big fan of investing in a few lightweight sweaters, be it a crewneck, V-neck or cardigan, in a year-round yarn that you can layer under blazers or over a dress for a comfy-yet-polished ‘fit. Plus, they’re a great way to inject a little more personality into your work outfits. “I always encourage my clients to infuse their style with a splash of color to let their personality truly shine,” says Glew. “Try a sweater in a jewel tone like a deep purple, Stitch Fix’s 2025 Color of the Year, for a subtle yet sophisticated statement with your favorite trousers.”

6. Simple Blouses or Button-Up Shirts

Both Glew and Gruccio agree, you really can’t go wrong with a crisp button-down shirt. But it isn’t the only top option available to you. A chic bow blouse or draped silk top looks just as professional and eliminates button frustrations. When in doubt, keep things simple—nothing too busy, too detailed or too flashy—and you should be in the clear.

7. Sophisticated Jewelry

Jewelry can instantly change the vibes of any outfit, including taking basic black trousers and a white button-up and making it look elegant and powerful. “Finish the look off with sophisticated jewelry in silver or gold finish, or both!” advises Gruccio. “Never worry about mixing your metals,” she notes, and I agree. So long as your jewelry pieces are a match in silhouette or vibe (i.e. pairing delicate chains with other delicate pieces, or chunky earrings with an equally chunky chain bracelet), they’ll still look cohesive, no matter the metal.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Pieces Are Most Important to Include in a Work Capsule Wardrobe?

“A well-rounded work capsule wardrobe starts with versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched effortlessly,” explains Glew. “Think oversize blazers, crisp button-down shirts and wide-leg trousers in neutral tones.” And Gruccio agrees, adding, “The foundation of a versatile work wardrobe are well-made, tailored sportswear pieces in modern silhouettes.” Ultimately, any capsule wardrobe should consist of pieces that can easily pair back to one another. Per Glew, “The goal is to have items that you can mix and match so you always feel prepared and excited to get dressed for work each morning.”

What Pieces Should You Avoid When Building a Work Capsule Wardrobe?

The key to a work capsule wardrobe is ease and practicality. “Avoid items that feel too fussy or impractical for day-to-day wear,” advises Glew. “While trendy pieces can work, focus on those you’ll want to wear repeatedly and that make you feel confident when stepping into the office.” And Gruccio reminds me, “A true capsule wardrobe should work year-round, so it’s best to avoid buying too many seasonal-specific items that can’t flow into the next.” She also recommends proceeding with caution when looking to add something bold or flashy to the mix. “For true versatility, I recommend avoiding stand-out prints for layering pieces and instead vote for year-round neutrals or even a monochromatic look when playing with fashion colors.”

How Can Someone Inject Their Own Personal Style into Their Outfit While Still Looking Appropriate for a Day at the Office?

“First of all, ‘classic’ means so much more these days,” notes Gruccio. “It doesn’t need to be traditional or boring. Of-the-moment shapes can still be classic, as long as you are tailored and put together. Feel free to experiment with some new silhouettes—this can also make your work wardrobe feel more your own.” She and Glew both suggest playing with accessories, like silk scarves, textured belts or bolder earrings as a way to zhuzh up your look. “Focus on subtle yet impactful details” advise Glew. “Incorporate pops of color through accessories like a vibrant tote or bold earrings, or opt for textures and prints that resonate with your style.”
