The start of a new year means a whole new wave of fashion trends to explore and play with. And as always, the easiest ones to incorporate into your existing wardrobe are color trends. You can wear the styles and silhouettes you already know and love, just in gorgeous new hues, offering a fresh twist on your classic look. This year there are two colors in particular that are cropping up literally everywhere I turn—burgundy and brown—but they’re not the only shades you should be wearing. Below you’ll find seven of the top winter color trends to know going into 2025 (plus one I advise skipping for now) to help you stand out from the pack.
These Are the 7 Top Color Trends to Know for Winter 2025, Plus 1 to Leave in 2024

1. Sky Blue
With denim-on-denim outfits proving to be a must-try trend for 2025, it’s no surprise that blue is at the forefront of our minds. And this pale shade is gorgeous for winter as it evokes images of frozen ponds and delicate snowflakes. Of course, this will also be a hot shade to sport come spring (and into summer), so don’t feel like you can only invest in sky blue winter staples.

2. Olive Green
Various shades of green have been bopping in and out of the top color trends for the past few years, including Bottega green, Brat green and kohlrabi. But right now it’s olive green that has captured my heart. This earthy tone is so easy to pair with almost any other color, and is a nice departure from the super-bright shades of late. I particularly love combining olive green with delicate pastels, but it looks just as fabulous with neutrals like navy or gray.

3. Red
This one should come as no surprise, but bright red continues to be one of the most popular colors to wear. No matter how big or small your red pieces are, they always pack a major punch. If you’ve thus far been making do with a bit of red lipstick or a hair scrunchie, I say that time has definitely come to try a red sweater vest, midi skirt or even a wool coat. Trust me, that cheerful pop will be so welcome come peak winter.
4. Butter Yellow
I’ve been fighting this color trend for a while, but it’s finally time for me to give in and accept that butter yellow is here to stay. This pale hue can feel tricky to wear, but the key lies in knowing what to pair it with. Next to other delicate shades, this trendy color runs the risk of washing you out entirely, which is why I prefer to wear it with darker options like navy blue, khaki brown, charcoal gray, forest green or even bright red.

5. Slate Gray
For the gal who prefers a neutral-toned wardrobe, I think slate gray is the way to go. It feels particularly cozy and warm in cold winter months, and is a nice break from the more obvious black. And if you opt for slightly heavier fabrics, like cashmere, wool or tweed, slate gray can look supremely chic (and not at all like a retro school-issued sweatsuit). Don’t be afraid to mix different tones of gray, too.

6. Pale Pink
I saw ballerina-inspired shades all throughout the fall/winter ’24 shows, and now they’re finally started to make their way onto my Instagram feed as well. To avoid looking washed out, you can always opt for a slightly richer hue, leaning more toward a cherry blossom or bubblegum. Either way, this is a shade that you can have a lot of fun mixing and matching with just about every other color in your wardrobe.

7. Khaki
Pantone named the color Sheepskin as one of it’s top trend predictions for fall 2025, and it seems they were really onto something with this one. Of course, khaki is never really out of style, but it is having something of a moment right now with khaki skirts, trousers, dresses and accessories showing up on my social feeds just as often as classic khaki trench coats. In fact, I highly recommend wearing this hue in larger swaths rather than smaller pops because it works as such a fabulous base for showcasing other bolder shades.

SKIP: Barbie Pink
I’m sad to report the days of Barbie-mania have, sadly, come and gone. That doesn’t mean you need to eschew this hot pink hue altogether, however! I suggest using this bold shade in smaller doses to add an attention-grabbing pop to an outfit comprised of more demure colors, rather than going all out with a head-to-toe monochrome outfit.
