With the NFL season underway, we’ve entered an exciting time where sports and fashion seamlessly merge. Thanks to prominent figures like Taylor Swift, whose support of her boyfriend Travis Kelce from the Kansas City Chiefs has attracted millions of new viewers, dressing for a football game has become a lot more fun. Another key player in this fashion-sports crossover is Kristin Jucszczyk, whose reworked clothing has gained significant popularity among athletes, celebrities (Swift included), fans and the NFL. (Oh, and did I mention that she’s also the wife of Kyle Jusczyk from the San Francisco 49ers?) With such high standards set by these WAGS, dressing for a tailgate and game might feel daunting, especially if it’s your first stadium experience. So, if you’re having a tough time trying to figure out what to wear to a football game, I’ve put together ten outfit ideas and highlighted a few fashion pitfalls to avoid.

1. Impress in a Varsity Jacket

If you’ve got it, flaunt it—a varsity jacket, that is. Possibly one of the biggest flexes, varsity jackets are such a cool way to showcase your team spirit. Plus, you can add your own patches and pins that you’ve collected at each stadium visit for your own mementos and keepsakes. Because of the lax nature of the vintage-looking outerwear, I’d opt for comfortable pieces like a graphic tee, zip-up hoodie and wide-leg jeans as your base.

2. Wear Matching Shorts and a Jacket in Your Team’s Colors

Warm temps expected on the weather forecast during game day? That calls for a matching shorts and jacket set. The athleisure jogger shorts will keep you cool and comfy while looking sporty, and the jacket adds a nice touch (and warmth). Bonus points if you’re able to rep your team with actual merch, but opting for existing pieces in your wardrobe in their colors will do, too.

3. Borrow Your Boyfriend’s Sweatshirt

Wearing your boyfriend’s oversize sweatshirt and knee-high boots has Ariana Grande circa 2018 written all over it. When it comes to sizing, bigger is better, especially if you plan on wearing the hoodie as a dress or over micro shorts. Then, balance the proportions with a statement knee-high boot. I know what you’re thinking: Wearing heels to an NFL stadium isn’t for the weak. And you’re right, but lug-sole or moto boots are both stylish and comfortable flat options to wear in place of heeled boots if you want to prioritize comfort.

4. Stick the Classics in an NFL Jersey, Denim and Leather

Yes, thousands of people will be wearing the same jersey, but that’s because it’s a classic. Pairing it with dark-wash jeans and a sleek leather jacket can instantly elevate the look to fashion touchdown territory. While I usually prefer oversize outfits, in this case I recommend sticking with a straight-leg jeans and a cropped jacket. The tailored fit will complement your frame without overwhelming it, especially given the jersey's already roomy nature.

5. Consider a Sporty Tracksuit

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but you don’t have to don a logo-embossed T-shirt, team sweatshirt or varsity jacket to show your support. Whether you don’t own any of the pieces I previously mentioned or just want to try something different, a tracksuit offers a sporty and stylish alternative without being too obvious. Pair it with UGG boots for added comfort with every step.

6. Dress Up and Down in Knit Dresses and Dad Shoes

Whether you’re heading out on a date or just looking to elevate your game-day outfit, sometimes it’s nice to switch things up from your usual T-shirt and jeans. While your team makes a thrilling interception in the last two minutes of the fourth quarter, you can make a statement in a chic mini dress. The key here is to opt for a knit dress, as the cozy material will feel more appropriate and casual while you’re cheering from the stands. Pair it with reliable dad sneakers for comfort and arch support—because after hitting your daily 10,000 steps by halftime, you’ll definitely appreciate the extra support.Top of Form

9. Go for the Unexpected in a Boho Skirt

Football outfits don’t have to be on-the-nose, people. Sure, a classic jersey is as sporty as it gets, but when you pair it with an ultra-feminine peasant skirt, you’re making a bold fashion statement. This unexpected combination creates a striking look that’s totally Instagrammable. To complete the ensemble, add accessories that showcase your personality. Adidas sneakers will connect the outfit back to the jersey, while bangles and handbags will add a touch of flair and bring the whole look together.

8. Accessorize in Your Team’s Colors

Football season runs through early January, making winter coats essential for those end-of-season games. The challenge? A long coat can sometimes overshadow your carefully chosen outfit. But don’t worry—one of the best ways to keep your team spirit alive is through vibrant accessories. Colorful handbags, shoes, beanies or jewelry pose a playful way you can add a pop of team pride while staying warm and stylish.Top of FormBottom of Form

7. Add on Layers with a Sturdy Flannel

The next time you decide what to wear to a football game—once temperatures begin to cool off, of course—consider a flannel. If it’s not already a staple in your fall capsule wardrobe, now’s the time to shop for one you like. Flannels offer the perfect blend of shirt, jacket and blanket, providing both warmth and versatility. Not to mention, flannels are a great way you can add color and layers into your outfit. Wear it over a turtleneck and sweater, or layer it under a puffer jacket if going to be a frigid one.

10. Marry Athleisure and Cowboy Core

Cowboy core might have hit its peak last spring, but cowboy boots are here to stay (and they’re not just for Cowboys fans, either). For your next game day, trade in your usual comfortable sneakers for a pair of trendy cowboy boots and combine them with your comfiest athleisure pieces, like leggings and a sweatshirt in your team’s colors. The stylish boots will elevate the loungewear, ensuring you look polished and put-together at the stadium.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Shoes Should I Wear to a Football Game?

There’s no rule preventing you from wearing whatever shoe you want, but if there’s one thing I’ve learned while attending my fair share of sports games, it’s that you’ll always wish you wore the comfy shoes. Remember, you’ll be walking a few hundred—if not thousand—steps to get to your seats, find your car in the parking lot, go to the bathroom, get drinks, buy merch and snacks, so comfort is key. Athletic sneakers, running shoes, dad shoes, walking shoes or ballet flats with arch support and cushioned soles won’t leave you with a foot full of blisters, aches or pains.

What Should You Not Wear to a Football Game?

Avoid wearing anything too tight, restrictive, impractical or painful on game day. Waist-cinching belts, oversize bags, too much white, high heels, formal dresses or suits are a no-go at the stadium. When you’re putting together a football game outfit, I suggest you opt for pieces that are casual, comfortable and practical. And don’t forget that you’ll be surrounded by rowdy crowds and the occasional spill of the person’s beer behind you when your team scores a touchdown, so make sure your outfit can withstand a few fumbles along the way.
