Growing up in a baseball-obsessed family, I really couldn’t escape the sport, from makeshift baseball games in the street with a janky wooden baseball bat and bases outlined in colorful chalk to late nights watching the New York Yankees and L.A. Dodgers (because my mom was a fan of both—yah…I know). Turns out, after all these years of watching some of the coolest players in the league, like Derek Jeter, A.Rod, Freddie Freeman and now Shohei Ohtani, I actually love the sport, and I especially enjoy going to baseball games. OK, yes, I equally love the hot dogs, too. I’m even proud to admit that I’ve become quite an expert when it comes to putting together baseball outfits. So, if you’re having a tough time trying to figure out what to wear to a baseball game, I sourced a few outfit ideas that can get you started and shared a few pointers I’ve learned along the way, including what not to wear. (Spoiler: A dad cap is a must, and you’ll want to break out your best straight-leg jeans.)

As a Dodger fan myself (hey, I’m a Angeleno through-and-through, can you blame me?), every baseball season I find myself prepping baseball game outfits ahead of time, mainly revolving around my favorite pairs of jeans and denim shorts for when it’s hot out. Occasionally, I’ll swap my denim out for some fun cargo pants and mix up my lightweight jackets for evening games, knowing the temperature will cool once the sun sets, but there are a few tips, tricks and lessons I’ve learned along the way that I just can’t gatekeep. Below, I’ve outlined a few practical tips I live by when deciding what I should wear to a baseball game.

5 Practical Tips for What to Wear to a Baseball Game

  • Prioritize comfort above all else: If there’s one thing I’ve learned while attending my fair share of baseball games throughout the years, it’s that being comfortable can be the difference between watching a remarkable five-run inning in the bottom of the ninth or listening to it on a static-filled radio station in your car because you left early (been there, done that). Anything fitted or too tight might make you feel like a hot dog stuffed into a small bun. So keep the dogs on the menu, and always consider comfort when picking out what to wear to a baseball game. Think: comfortable sneakers, soft sweaters and practical pants.
  • Be sure to bring a hat and sunglasses: ICYDK, accessories aren’t just for looks, they’re also a must-have if you want to actually *see* a strikeout or stolen base and shield your eyes from the sun. A baseball cap is actually a great way to protect your skin from a bad sunburn and a scolding from your dermatologist.
  • Opt for breathable materials: Sometimes you’re not always blessed with a late game and have to endure a few hours in the hot sun. Don’t forget that the reflection of the bleachers and hundreds of people around you make the temperature feel ten times hotter, which is why it’s essential to wear materials that’ll keep you cool, like linen and cotton.
  • Master the art of layering: Whether you run hot or cold, nothing can quite prepare you for the changing weather throughout a baseball game. One minute the sun is beating down on your shoulders and the next you’re met with an overcast sky and slight winds. Layering is such a smart way to battle whatever the weather has in store for you, not to mention it can save you from spending $100 on a baseball jacket. Plus, a sweater draped over your shoulders or tied around your waist is a great way to elevate your outfit.
  • Go for practical shoes: I love high heels just as much as the next girl, but even I know when to swap ‘em out for my walking shoes. Whenever I go to baseball games, I prepare myself to walk a LOT, from the parking lot to my seats to the concession stands to the bathrooms to the bar. I can guarantee that you’ll regret wearing those high heels as you’re climbing the stairs up to section 3 or 4.

1. Consider Cargo Pants as an Edgy Alternative to Jeans

I must admit, cargo pants have been my saving grace more times than I can count, especially when I can’t seem to coordinate an outfit for the baseball game or I’m simply running late (shocker). They’re cool, edgy and offer a refreshing break from overworked jeans. Best of all, you don’t have to do too much to make a solid outfit that looks effortless and chic. A simple white tank top and lightweight sweater will do the trick, not to mention the extra layer will come in handy for night games.

2. Dress Down Your 9-to-5 Button-Up Shirt

Whoever says that button-up shirts are reserved for the office needs to see me. A longtime staple of the capsule wardrobe, button-ups can be dressed up or down and they’ll always look 10 out of 10. The key to wearing one to a baseball game is to dress it down. One way to do this is to tie the front into a crop (like the image above) and roll up the sleeves; the more lived-in, the better. Don’t forget to finish it off with a baseball cap of your choice and a pair of lax denim joggers. A jumbotron-worthy fit if you ask me.

3. Don Sporty Track Pants

You probably already know that we’re in a Sambas-craze (the sporty sneaker is practically everywhere you turn), but what you may not know is that there’s another Adidas piece taking over: Adidas track pants. Stylish to its core, this ‘lax and comfortable pant may feel like your comfiest sweats, but boy do they look anything but lazy. If you want to dress them up but maintain that air of athletic sophistication, throw on an oversize white poplin shirt (but keep some buttons undone and cuffs unrolled) and jean jacket. (Trust me: You’ll look like you’re a pro at catching flyballs.)

4. Throw on a Coach’s Jacket

Don’t overcomplicate a baseball game day outfit. Sometimes the simplest additions, like throwing on a coach’s jacket, will do the trick. It can even turn your work trousers and collared shirt into the smartest stadium-ready ‘fit, as you see above.

5. Rep Your Team in a Baseball Jersey

As my mom would say: Always, always, always wear a baseball jersey to a baseball game. Traditional? Yes. Tired? Absolutely not. A baseball jersey is ultimate classic piece that will never look out of place, so keep it classic with other staple pieces. I like the idea of opting for sleeker basics, such as a dark denim and a black tank top, if you want to feel a little more polished, as opposed to light washes that can read less refined. Comfort and ease are key here, so go ahead and wear your plushest footwear.

6. Elevate Athleisure Pieces

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but that tennis skirt of yours doesn’t have to be reserved only for the courts. In fact, a tenniscore coded getup is the perfect mixture of sporty and preppy with the rows of pleats, swingy silhouettes and sweat-wicking performance material. If you want to make it clear that you weren’t breaking a sweat before the big game, pop on a chunky leather loafer rather than an athletic sneaker and chic sunglasses instead of a visor hat to really up the ante.

7. Opt for the Classics (like Leather Jackets, Jeans and Sneakers)

When in doubt, revisit the classics. A trusty leather jacket, your favorite blue jeans and a pair of white sneakers will never go out of style, and they look especially effortlessly chic when paired altogether. Not to mention, it’s the type of outfit that won’t feel uncomfortable or stuffy when you’re headed into the bottom of the ninth and both teams are all tied up.

8. Embrace Boxer Pants, but Ground Them with Core Staples

You may have heard of the boxer short trend Gen Z brought to the forefront of summer-wear, and I’m here to assure you that boxer pants (aka, a longer version of the traditional brief style) can make for a suitable option to wear to a baseball game, especially if you opt for a colorway that matches your team. As a huge proponent of the relaxed cotton pants, I’m not going to deny how they can easily be read as pajamas if styled incorrectly, though I’ve found a workwear jacket, baseball hat and sunnies, like in the image above, can do the trick and make them look intentional.

9. Don’t Underestimate a Sweatsuit

One of my sister’s favorite looks to wear to a baseball game just so happens to be a matching sweatshirt and sweatpants. Above all else, she prioritizes comfort and swears by a sweatsuit, somehow making the loungewear enviously cool and not at all like clothes meant for the home. And this boils down to the fit: You’ll want to get something that’s roomy—not too fitted or oversize—but still clings at the hem and ankles to keep some tailoring intact. Lastly, my sister likes to lean into the whole “I woke up like this” vibe, so dad sneakers and sporty wraparound sunglasses are a must.

10. Do: Cutoff Shorts and a Tank Top on a Hot Day

Not only are we in peak baseball season, we’re also in peak summer, meaning the sun is going to feel extremely hot on game day, especially if it’s in the afternoon. If your seats are in the line of fire, a pair of cutoff shorts and a tank top—in the color of your team, of course—that lets your legs, chest, back and armpits breathe is key. Then keep it casual with a pair of trusty Converse for a classic touch.

11. Dress a Slip Dress Down with Dad Sneakers

Gearing up for a company outing or a big date? Break out your slinky slip dress from your closet the next time you’re deciding what you should wear to a baseball game. Sexy to its core and oh-so thin and lightweight, the slip dress is guaranteed to keep you cool while looking super sleek in one go, and a hem that ends just above the knee will offer an ample amount of coverage and have an informal look suitable for a sports game that a maxi won’t offer. As for shoes, save your high heels for the game-winning nightcap and instead opt for a chunky dad sneaker. It’s an off-duty model ‘fit that reminds me of something Kendall Jenner would wear.

12. Try Casual Overalls

What’s more all-American than a pair of denim overalls? A one-piece garment is not only tremendously easy to style, it also makes an ideal outfit to wear to a baseball game. Just make sure to wear a tank top or T-shirt underneath so you can unlatch the straps and have it dangle at your waist when the sun starts acting up. If you want to jazz it up a bit, do so with accessories, like acetate sunglasses and chunky, strappy sandals.

13. Sport Some Basketball Shorts and High Tops

OK, if you need a break from the rigid cotton and stiff fit of jeans or denim shorts, then you might want to consider wearing a cool pair of basketball shorts and some snazzy shoes a sneakerhead would approve of. It’s comfortable yet oh-so stylish, showing off just how in-the-know you are when it comes to athletic fashion.

14. Jazz Up a Plain White T-Shirt and Capri Leggings with Colorful Footwear

Good news: You don’t have to take off those workout leggings that you practically live in at home (don’t worry, I won’t tell). Turns out, when you style a white T-shirt with leggings, you’re met with a staple outfit that’s comfortable above all else. Hot tip: Capris are the silhouette of the season, so make sure you reserve your longer pieces for yoga class. Top it off with a colorful sandal or shoe that commands attention, but make sure it’s still comfortable enough to walk from the parking lot to the concession stand to the nosebleeds.

15. If You Wear White, Make It All American with a Striped Polo and Relaxed Pants

While I’m hesitant to wear an all-white outfit to a baseball game surrounded by threats of ketchup and mustard spills, peanut crumbs and who knows what else, I won’t completely knock it out as an option…after all, I have worn white linen pants to a game before. Though I would break the blank canvas up with patterns, particularly a nautical-inspired sailor shirt or sweater, as this will add some texture and act as a distraction if you do happen to have a mishap with a hot dog. Don’t forget to don a baseball cap with your team’s logo for an all-American look.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Shoes Should I Wear to a Baseball Game?

I can’t stress this enough—wear the comfy shoes that won’t leave you with blisters or aches and pains. You’ll never regret wearing a pair of dad shoes, athletic sneakers, running shoes or everyday walking styles, but I’m proof that there’s a strong chance you’ll regret wearing high heels (no matter how comfortable you think they are). I know what you’re thinking: Sometimes I want to dress cute, even if I’m going to watch a baseball game. Good news: There are plenty of stylish shoes that are still comfy as heck, including ballet flats with arch support and sandals if you’re bold enough to rock open-toe shoes.

What Accessories Should I Wear to a Baseball Game?

A baseball cap is the most important item you’ll want to wear to a baseball game. It’s an easy way to rep your team, protect your skin and shield your eyes from the sun. It also doubles as your own makeshift glove just in case you need to catch a flyball. When it comes to your handbag, you’ll want to double-check with your stadium, as there may be restrictions on size and material. I’ve had to run back to the car and hide my forbidden black purse underneath the seat, so if you want to make it through the security checkpoint without a hitch, I’d recommend investing in a clear crossbody bag. As for jewelry, go all out on your favorite pieces, from hoop earrings to rings to bangles and more; just think twice before wearing a belt if you’re the type who doesn’t want it digging into your stomach all game long.

What Should You Not Wear to a Baseball Game?

This is a casual outing, so you’ll want to avoid wearing waist-cinching belts, oversize bags, too much white, high heels, formal dresses, suits or really anything too stiff on game day. A baseball outfit should prioritize comfortability, practicality and ease. After all, you’ll be walking a lot, sitting for hours and in a pretty rowdy environment surrounded by a lot of people and food scraps. And don’t get me started on the inevitable spill of the person’s beer behind you when your team scores a home run.
