What happens in Washington, D.C…is sure to affect the rest of the country. And I’m not just talking politics. It seems Capitol Hill is just as influential when it comes to fashion. Case in point? The massive surge in popularity of one particular tweed dress, which has taken wardrobes on both sides of the aisle by storm this season. I am, of course, talking about the Tuckernuck Jackie Dress, a shifty little number that retails at a cool $268 on the D.C.-based retailer’s website, and which can be found in plenty of gushing TikTok videos and Instagram #OOTDs.

After seeing the buzz surrounding it on X (formerly known as Twitter), as well as reading a recent deep dive into the style courtesy of the Washington Post, I knew I had to give the famous dress a twirl for myself, if only to see what all the hype was about. Spoiler alert: It has my vote to become the “It” dress of fall 2024—here’s why.

My Review of the Tuckernuck Jackie Dress

True to its name, the Jackie dress embodies the prim and preppy aura of its namesake, none other than Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. So much so that it made me, an edgy New Yorker in the midst of a Brat summer, feel like an aspiring first lady as soon as I put it on. I swear, I felt the urge to seek out babies to kiss and crowds to wave at on my way to brunch in Brooklyn.

It comes in a slew of colors, including some very fall-ready hues like red, navy and emerald green, but I’m partial to the hot pink I ordered, which looks so gorgeous and vibrant in person.

It has a hidden back zipper closure, and is constructed of a thick polyester tweed material that feels incredibly sturdy without being stiff. It’s also fully lined, which means there’s no risk of the tweed scratching against your skin and causing uncomfortable chafing (#bless). Due to its weighty, high-quality fabric, I’ll admit that the Jackie left me feeling toasty when I wore it on a recent August afternoon, but that just means it’ll be perfect for crisp autumn weather.

Tuckernuck

The style is striking for its swingy, ‘60s-esque A-line silhouette that, based on its more than 900 5-star reviews, has proven flattering on all sorts of body types (including my 5-foot-1 frame). Because of its shape, however, which flares out toward the hem to provide quite a roomy fit, the dress does run a bit large. I’m usually a medium in clothing, but after peeping the size guide, I went for the small. Since trying it on, I think I even could’ve gotten away with the XS, which is almost never a thought that I have while shopping.

To be safe, I do recommend going down just one size if you want a slimmer, but not too-tight fit. I like that mine hugs at my chest, then leaves plenty of space for me to breathe without feeling constricted, even if it’s not as body-skimming as the dresses I typically wear. Tuckernuck does offer free returns within 30 days, though, so you can try a few different sizes if you’re unsure, then send the rest back (just make sure the color is not on sale and can be returned).

In addition to its shape, the frock stands out for its adorable braided accents at the neckline and at the hips, which create the look of a pocket, complete with gold buttons. Unfortunately, those aren’t functional pockets, which may be my main complaint about this otherwise on-the-(old)-money style. While I was wearing it, I kept instinctively putting my hands there to tuck them in, to no avail. If this style ever gets a revamp, I do hope that pockets are on the docket.

Bottom Line

Tuckernuck

With the fall already off to a “very demure” start, I can’t think of a more definitive dress to act as the season’s stylish poster child. After all, who is more synonymous with demureness than Jackie O.? Given its ladylike aesthetic and well-to-do tweed finish, the Tuckernuck Jackie dress is as office-appropriate as it is occasion-worthy; I’m already planning to wear it to some baby showers and christenings I have coming up over the next few months. Pricey though it is, the frock’s quality indicates longevity, so I have no doubt I’ll be keeping it in my rotation for years to come. Also, in my opinion, its lack of pockets is made up for by the fact that it is machine-washable; I’d happily have nothing to do with my hands if it meant avoiding the dry cleaners. All in all, I can see why this style has taken off in the nation’s capital—and why it’s sure to be heading to a closet near you this autumn.
