The right shoes can make or break an outfit. They can transform your look from a throwback costume to vintage chic, elevate casual basics for cocktail hour or give you that little extra pep in your step. And that is especially true of these five spring shoe trends. As I’ve been combing through endless street style photos from fashion month, plus all the gorgeous new collections hitting stores right now, I’ve noticed a few trends popping up more often than others. Read on to see the only five shoe trends you need to know to make spring 2024 your most fashionable season yet.

1. Mary Jane Flats

Flats in general are majorly trendy this year, but Mary Jane styles with a dainty strap (or two) are particularly popular right now. Be sure to look for a pair with a square or pointed toe to balance out the inherent sweetness of this throwback shoe. And if you’re unsure about investing entirely, I suggest looking for a pair with an elastic strap that can be worn under the foot when you like to switch things up.

How to Style Them:

Have some fun and wear your flats with socks and supremely chic and posh separates, like a midi skirt and cropped jacket, for a quirky vibe. Or, use them to dress up your jeans and T-shirt on the weekend.

2. Court Sneakers

Skater shoes and chunky dad sneakers are both great options for spring 2024, but the reigning trend (other than the Adidas Samba craze) is definitely the court sneaker. Basketball, tennis and even pickleball kicks are the way to go, whether you prefer a clean, all-white look or bolder pops of color.

How to Style Them:

Gen Z tends to style their comfortable sneakers with chunky socks and either cropped pants or miniskirts, while millennials seem to prefer sleeker socks that poke out just at the ankle (or our beloved no-show styles) and wide-leg trousers or straight-leg jeans. But the beauty of these shoes is that they can be made to work with just about anything in your wardrobe, from sundresses to suits. The world is your comfortably clad oyster.

3. ‘90s Slingback Heels

The ‘90s revival is still going strong, so prepare yourself to see lots of throwback heels in the very near future. It makes sense, as we ease ourselves back into wearing heels, that we’d opt for a slingback kitten heel or square-toe mule over a sky-high stiletto in an effort to prioritize comfort and wearability. Even if you prefer a pointed-toe, that fits right into the mix as well.

How to Style Them:

My favorite way to wear a ‘90s-era shoe will always be with other ‘90s-era staples—straight midi and maxi skirts with a baby doll tee, trousers and a camisole or a sleek miniskirt and tailored button-up shirt. But they also pair beautifully with jeans in any silhouette, as well as cocktail dresses and floaty boho midis. Consider these the most versatile shoe in your 2024 wardrobe.

4. Knee-High Boots

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Knee-high boots are having a moment. I’m already prepared to call them the It shoe of 2024, although there’s plenty of time for me to be proven wrong. Lean toward either classic, sleek leather boots with an almond toe and slim heel, or flat riding boots with as many or as few buckles and equestrian details as you like.

How to Style Them:

Balance the tall boot shaft by showing a little skin, either with a mini or knee-length dress or skirt. And don’t be afraid to embrace this trend even if you’re petite. The key for folks of any height is to find a boot that hits about two inches below the knee, which you can also fake by opting for a pair that dips down in front.

5. Cowboy Boots

Just when I thought this trend was on its way out, Beyoncé goes ahead and announces she’s in her country era. There is a 100 percent chance cowboy boots, fringe, suede and all things western loom large for the rest of 2024, so if you haven’t already, you should probably take them all back out of storage.

How to Style Them:

Time will tell exactly which variations of the trend become most popular (my money’s on silver metallics and highly-detailed designs), but in any and all cases you can wear your cowboy boots with classic wardrobe basics to let them steal the spotlight. Pull them on over leggings or skinny jeans with a cropped jacket, or try a mini shirtdress.
