As I stew for the next couple of months in frigid temps, I've been contemplating ways to add a little something extra to my bundled-up winter outfits. Well, leave it to Taylor Swift to find the perfect way to add a pop of color to any muted look: red tights.

Though statement tights may seem like a relic of the OG Gossip Girl (ahem, I'm looking at you Blair Waldorf) or indie twee era of the 2010s, fashion girls have been bringing them back into the fold for months now. Just flip through any recent street style photography emerging from Paris and Milan to see red ones in particular back in full force. And honestly, it totally works.

A pair of statement tights can actually help to draw attention to the other more muted parts of your outfit, especially if they're worn in tandem with a monochrome look. Adding a vibrant burst of color heightens the visual interest of your look, drawing the eye downward and allowing your beholder to fully take it all in. Also, if you're opting for red tights in the winter, they will often contrast with your surroundings (for example, icy, white snow or dreary gray weather), which will help to make you stand out in a sea of darker hues.

As for Swift's take on the trendy legwear? To attend the Kansas City Chiefs v. Buffalo Bills AFC Championship Game at Arrowhead Stadium last weekend, she paired her red tights with a black, oversized Louis Vuitton zip-up sweater, a black pleated skirt, black boots, black purse and black beanie. In addition to pairing the red tights with a monochrome look, she tied it all together with a red lip—drawing eyes first to her face and then down toward her legs, naturally nudging you to scan her whole outfit. It's a little trick that PureWow editors refer to as sandwich styling.

By donning similar pieces on your top and bottom and wearing something contrary in the middle, sandwich styling allows a person to create a balanced fit. For Swift, her red lip and red tights act as the "bread" and the black monochrome pieces in the middle act as the "filling," leading to a fun, but aesthetically cohesive look.
