As I type, I’m nearing the end of my second trimester with my second baby—a boy—due in October. At the start of my pregnancy, I felt naively excited about summer maternity fashion. With my first, I was super-pregnant in the winter months, which meant my style was basically bulky sweaters and leggings…kind of boring. Summer pregnancy attire sounded more billowy, lightweight and freeing. But as it turns out, it’s proven remarkably hard to find comfy maternity wear that I can throw on when temps hit the low 100s (um, yes, that’s how hot the “real feel” was in Brooklyn this week).

That is, until I started shopping for non-maternity styles. Love it or hate it, summer looks for even non-pregnant women have gotten pretty belly-friendly in recent years…and I’m here for it. In other words, I’m looking for comfort, practicality and dresses that don’t hug my figure, but instead prioritize breathability through silhouette, fabric or design.

Here are the three I’ve been living in this summer.

ME+EM

The first is from the royally-approved brand ME+EM, a swing dress in their signature cheesecloth fabric that can be worn belted or not. (This style will totally have a second life next summer when I’m postpartum and can once again celebrate my waist.) I love this dress for its roominess, but also the fact that it comes with fashion-forward detailing—like the lace at the collar—that makes it distinctively not maternity wear.

Next up, this gauzy, breezy dress from Xirena, called the Lennox. In its rosy hue, it feels bold and bright, but also bump-friendly. (That said, I love the other colors, too.) I followed the size guidelines, according to my pre-pregnancy fit, and found this style still came with plenty of fabric flexibility. Additionally, the built-in waist hit my 5’2” frame just below my chest, which gave it the feel of an empire style—a silhouette that maximizes comfort during pregnancy, according to a stylist I recently chatted with for another story about maternity wear.

Hill House

Finally, the ever-iconic Ellie nap dress from Hill House, which lo and behold, is now marketed as bump-friendly on their website. Indeed, the empire waist and flexible chest smocking has left me reaching for it multiple days a week and in different colors, too. The fit already runs a bit large (the recommendation has always been to size down if you’re in between sizes), so the dress comes with tons of space already. But I also treasure it for its breathability and stretch. OK, the pockets, too.
