Trench coats, white jeans and colorful flats will always be in for spring, but it’s the newest batch of silhouettes, patterns and colors we’re most excited to wear this season. Last year brought us square necklines, oversize sleeves and cropped denim, so what does 2020 have in store? Here are eight of the biggest and most wearable trends that we can't wait to try ASAP.

Minimalist Spring Accessory Trends That Will Work for Every Budget

1. Wide-leg Jeans

This is as much a runway trend as it is a street-style one, appearing on models at Khaite, Zadig et Voltaire and Celine—as well as on the stems of some of our favorite street-style stars, like Mary Leest and Veronika Heilbrunner. These wide-cut denim styles are longer than the crops you wore last summer and less flared than the bootcut jeans of the ’90s and early 2000s. Wear them with sneakers, loafers or flat sandals rather than heels to keep the vibe relaxed and easy.

2. Wallpaper Prints

Home decor and fashion collide to create one whimsical trend. It turns out that bold ’60s blooms, Grecian tiles and toile look just as good on a sundress as they do on your walls. The more delicate patterns, such as romantic toile or razor-thin stripes, look gorgeous on floor-grazing silhouettes, but if you prefer to wear tropical fronds, geometric flowers or other oversize prints, we suggest sticking to shorter hems so as not to overwhelm your frame. Of course, you can always opt to start small by testing this vibrant look with a handbag, headband or pair of shoes instead.

Shop the trend: O'Neil pants ($60); NST Studio bag ($175; $120); Katie Kime skirt ($188); Rebecca Taylor top ($350; $210); H&M dress ($249); Shoshanna dress ($375)

3. Architectural Strappy Sandals

Last year’s sandal moment was all about minimalism. Now, however, designers including Tibi and Ulla Johnson are jazzing up their kicks with fresh details, like a wave of leather on the side of the foot, a faux toe ring with adjoined straps and a sharp square-toe front. The strappy sandals of 2020 are every bit as elegant as their predecessors, just a bit more detail-oriented.

4. Tiered Dresses

Voluminous minis, midis and maxis are still reigning supreme, only this time around they have much more nuance than a simple tent dress. Flouncy tiers, whether they’re true or just suggested, bring more shape and structure without losing any ease or comfort (the main reasons we flock to these flowy frocks in the first place). If tent dressing isn’t quite in your repertoire, look for dresses with a series of ruffles à la the white Alexander McQueen number above and finish the look with a belt to define your waist among all that fabric.

5. ’90s Shoulder Bags

The return of this simple style can almost certainly be traced back to the craze surrounding Dior’s revamped saddle bag in 2018. Soon after came the Prada Nylon Mini-Bag, the Louis Vuitton Monogram Pochette Accessoires and all other types of minimal and nostalgic designs, characterized by a half-moon shape and a short shoulder strap. They’re definitely an upgrade from the impractical (but oh so fun) mini bag trend from the past few years.

6. Drawstring Details

Now that leggings, sweatsuits and sporty sneakers have become not just acceptable but actually cool to wear in public, designers are looking for new ways to bring the athletic aesthetic to the streets. In 2019, that took the shape of high-end anoraks, and in 2020, it’s the drawstring detail, at least for designers like 3.1 Phillip Lim, Bottega Veneta and Burberry. Whether it’s sexy drawstrings at the hem of a slip dress or drawstrings cinching the sleeves of a pullover, you can expect to spot these sporty finishes all over town this spring.

7. Bermuda Shorts Suits

Longer shorts in general will be everywhere this summer, but on the runways at Givenchy and Altuzarra, designers smartly styled them as easy suits with matching blazers. The most flattering pairs hit right above or in the middle of the knee, and because they offer so much coverage, why not show a bit more skin elsewhere? Try a silky cami or a sheer blouse on top, or layer a bra top under your blazer (much like Katie Holmes with her cashmere twin set seen round the world).

Shop the trend: ASOS blazer ($92) and shorts ($40; $22); Mango blazer ($130) and shorts ($80); Scotch & Soda blazer ($198) and shorts ($115); Farm Rio blazer ($220) and shorts ($125); Elie Tahari blazer ($448) and shorts ($198)

8. Exaggerated Collars

Whether you prefer the sharp disco styles seen at Lanvin and Victoria Beckham, or the Peter Pan variety done up in sequins by Tory Burch, you can expect to see a whole lot of emphasized collars over the next few months. And while you can certainly lean into the John Travolta vibes if you’d like, there are other ways to bring retro necklines into 2020. The trick is all in playing with opposites, so pair a disco sequin collar with sailor stripes and loose jeans, or wear a lace ruff with tailored trousers (or yeah, trendy Bermuda shorts).
