Nordstrom fall: A collage of women wearing fal items
Paula Boudes for PureWow

Is it just us, or is fall flying by this year? We’re nearly halfway through the season of pumpkin patches, the *best* treats at Trader Joe’s and cozy cocktails by the fireplace (or at least the yule log on Netflix—real ones know). It’s also the time of year that our sundresses take a backseat in the closet to our coziest sweaters, oversized jackets and fleece-lined everything. If your autumn wardrobe is looking a little worse for wear (or you just need an excuse to shop), we know just where to look for the best inspo: Nordstrom

From the most flattering jeans on the planet (yes, we're referring to the Mother The Hustler jeans, $195), to the most lumber-chic shacket ($45) around, Nordstrom has everything you'll need to round out your closet. We even spoke to the company's managing fashion editor, Kate Bellman, to get the inside scoop on what’s trending for the season and the pieces she can’t wait to snag for herself. The result? 25 of the best Nordstrom fall fashion pieces the season has to offer, pulled from more than 100 options on the site.

Meet the Expert

Kate Bellman is the head of editorial and content at Nordstrom, bringing more than 20 years of experience in the fashion and retail industry to her role. She has been with Nordstrom for more than ten years, having worked in various positions in designer merchandising, and has served as the company's fashion director in addition to her current role as the editorial team lead.

What’s New for Fall at Nordstrom?

For fall, Bellman says the company is “focusing on the key pieces that set the foundation for a forever wardrobe." As she explains, "This is the season to invest in those pieces you’ll love now and cherish forever.”

According to Bellman, “trends” this season mirror Nordstrom's selections in that they're pieces you’ll be eyeing to still pull out in a year’s time—or more. “One of the biggest trends for this fall season is the modernizing of classics,” she says. “Think about the elevated essentials you’ll wear everywhere and have in your wardrobe for years to come."

There's also a focus on heritage pieces that feel both town and country (think quilted outerwear, $130, or striped menswear, $1,420).

Beyond just choosing pieces that could slot into your capsule wardrobe, Bellman says tailoring is key. "It offers a level of versatility, from a polished blazer to an effortless trench," she advises.

In terms of colors, Bellman finds that "gray is replacing deep darks as the new neutral, and red emerges as the statement stand-out as we head into the holiday season."

How We Chose the Best Nordstrom Buys for Fall

Bellman's insights set the tone for our 25 top picks. In addition to her hand-picked suggestions, we utilized her fall fashion advice, combing through every inch of the site to find the highest-reviewed representations of her suggestion to round out our list. Below, you'll find foundational pieces that range from boots and shackets to sweater dresses, as well as some pricier items that are true investment pieces.

With the cushioned sole providing “all-day comfort,” according to happy shoppers, and a walking-friendly 2-inch heel, you’ll be pulling them out for seasons to come.

Nili Lotan

One of Bellman’s top picks for the season is this menswear-inspired blazer in the softest virgin wool. While the price point may be steep, it's an essential wardrobe staple you'll be wearing for eons. As Bellman says, "It’s truly a forever piece that will withstand any trend." She adds: "Its styling possibilities are endless. [It's] a great wear-to-work option or a polished look with jeans and boots on the weekend.”

Best Flare Jeans

3. Mother The Hustler Jeans

What We Like

  • ultra-flattering
  • hold their shape

What We Don't Like

  • expensive

Mother

A fall wardrobe isn’t complete without a pair of jeans you can throw on without thinking when heading out to grab that PSL or on a first (or second, or third) date. These ones from Mother, which feature a flare silhouette and are cut off at the ankle, are an instant confidence booster. One reviewer writes: “These jeans fit like a glove! So many jeans have so much stretch that they don’t suck you in and these are not as stretchy, which is perfect! These hold their shape and suck in the gut beautifully!" Some shoppers say they tend to run small, however, so consider sizing up.

Best Faux Leather Leggings

4. Spanx Faux Leather Leggings

What We Like

  • available in petite sizes
  • luxe look
  • good compression

What We Don't Like

Spanx

Faux-leather leggings have long been a go-to for when you want to elevate your look but remain as comfy as possible. Our editors (and the rest of the planet) are obsessed with these ones from Spanx, since they don’t disappoint when it comes to style or compression. (In fact, if you order your regular size, they might suck you in a little too much—size up!) Follow the care directions (machine-wash but dry flat) to keep the faux-leather finish on point.

5. Avec Les Filles Donegal Coat

What We Like

  • adjustable tie
  • medium weight

What We Don't Like

Avec Les Filles

Pink is in the red family that Bellman says is trending for fall. It's also a great way to instantly brighten up a cloudy, sunless day. This coat, which has a classic plaid print besides, is made of a polyester and wool blend that buyers say has a medium weight. It's got an adjustable tie to help with the fit, too, which is a good thing—reviewers say this runs a bit large and may be best for taller gals.

6. Larroudé Leather Blair Flats

Better yet, there's a memory-foam cushion for comfort.

This blazer has a boxy fit that's right on trend and also comfortable to wear, according to its fans. We also love the neutral, autumn-ready Tan Nougat hue. There are pockets at the sides and a back vent for a bit of circulation. You'll want to make sure you've got a steamer ($24) on hand, however, since the polyester/rayon blend reportedly wrinkles super easily.

Ferragamo

Bellman’s pick for fall's new "it" bag is this soft calfskin Ferragamo find in her top color pick for the season—Fog Gray (though we certainly wouldn’t say no to the vibrant yellow). “The soft gray color feels really luxurious and elevated," she explains. "I also love the multiple ways to wear it, from both a crossbody to a huggable oversized clutch. It’s unlike any other handbag I own.”

Layers are the name of the game this season, and nothing says "fall Instagram story" more than a cozy shacket. The perfect transitional piece for chilly mornings that aren't quite full-on coat temps, this jacket/shirt hybrid can be paired with anything from jeans to a midi dress and boots. Unlike your favorite cashmere sweater, however, it can be thrown right in the wash, since it's made of a tough polyester that shoppers say is surprisingly soft. It comes in four neutral color combos, too.

If you need a lightweight-yet-warm jacket to take with you to the family cabin upstate (or you just want to look like you have a family cabin upstate), a quilted barn jacket is the look you’ll be coveting. (It's also PureWow’s pick for *the* fall coat of 2023.) This one from Ralph Lauren has a contrasting corduroy spread collar for some intrigue and a subtle embroidered RL logo. It's filled with polyester for warmth, and can go right in the washer when it's dirty.

For a statement coat that gives more of a whisper than a shout, look no further than this Ted Baker staple. Blended from polyester and virgin wool, both of which excel at wicking moisture, it's a great pick for a slushie day. The soft neutral color palette is always en vogue, and the built-in scarf and fringe detailing keep it current. Some reviewers say it runs big, however, so you may want to size down to get the perfect fit.

Does Nordstrom Price Match?

Excellent news for all you deal-hunters out there: Nordstrom’s price match policy is (almost) as good as its fall assortment. Per the company, “If you find a better price at Nordstrom or a competitor for an item you purchased, we’ll match it and refund you the difference.”

You'll want to note that the adjustment does not apply to outlet or flash sale prices or most already on sale at Nordstrom.

What is Nordstrom’s Return Policy?

On the off chance you don’t absolutely love the item you purchased from Nordstrom, you can easily return it either in-store or via mail. Nordstrom will provide the shipping label if you choose to send the item back in the mail or the QR code if you'd rather bring it back to the store. Once the item has been received, refunds can be expected in roughly three to 19 business days. (Note that in-store purchases are processed more quickly.)
