If there’s one thing we can all agree on, it’s that leggings have become an unapologetic main character in our wardrobes. Times are tough and it’s just not worth it to wear uncomfortable clothes anymore. Ok, and stretchy pants are the only thing we want to wear while working from home.

But we’re also getting pretty damn bored of the same sweatshirt and leggings and slippers outfit we’ve been throwing on morning after morning. Which is why it’s officially time to switch things up. Here, seven new leggings outfits to try out in 2021 (including one look that’s safe to retire, ASAP).

16 Fashion Subscription Boxes That Are Actually Worth It

1. Puffer Jacket + Tall Lug-sole Boots

Surely you’ve tried out some version of this outfit, but the piece that makes this feel super trendy is that clunky pair of lug-sole boots. We think they’re a worthy investment for this winter, since they have the power to modernize almost every outfit you wear them with, even if it’s a simple pair of leggings and a black puffer to match.

Get the look: Apparis Jemma Puffer Jacket ($385); Anthropologie Bonnie Fringed Wrap Scarf ($48; $30); No Nonsense Leggings ($13); Tory Burch Kira Jacquard Small Convertible Shoulder Bag ($498); Vagabond Shoemakers Cosmo 2.0 Boot ($265)

2. Colorful Flare Leggings + A Neutral Sweatshirt

Yep, flared leggings are back baby. But you don’t have to stick to basic black for this throwback silhouette. We love how Katie Sturino turned these tropical print pants into a light, cheerful statement by keeping the rest of her outfit in neutral tones but adding in another pop of color with an unexpected orange crossbody. BRB, going to buy flared leggings in all the colors.

Get the look: Lele Sadoughi Sand Corduroy Knotted Headband ($65); Amaavi Altair Sunglasses ($295); Athleta Coaster Luxe Sweatshirt ($79; $56); See by Chloé Logo Chain-Strap Bag ($231; $196); Ala Von Auersperg Elaine Stretch Knit Pant ($295); New Balance Women's 311 V2 Sneaker ($88)

3. Stirrup Leggings + Loafers

It’s pretty amazing to see how a little detail can change the entire look of the pants we’ve been wearing steadily since March 2020. But the stirrup detail that’s been gaining quite a bit of attention over the past month or so is the fresh update we didn’t even know we were craving. Wear these with a pair of thin socks and a loafer—and top it all off with a fun shacket—and you’ve got a totally novel look on your hands.

Get the look: White + Warren Plush Rib Beanie ($145); Max Studio Houndstooth Dolman Sweater ($108; $36); Collusion Faux Wool Shacket ($56); Plush Fleece Lined Stirrup Tights ($37); Hue Women’s Jeans Socks ($7); Sam Edelman Loraine Loafer ($130; $70); Hiva Atelier Midi Harmonia ($250)

4. Short Sleeve Cardi + Scrunched Socks + Sneakers

You likely have a few cardigans lying around at home—but have you ever tried out a short sleeve iteration of the knit? When paired with some white tube socks, it feels cool but still feels totally cozy.

Get the look: Monki Puffy Fluffy Rib Short Sleeve Cardigan ($48; $31); All Access Center Stage Legging ($98); Girlfriend Collective Please Recycle Crew Socks ($14); Hoka One One Bondi 7 ($150)

5. A Super Fancy Blouse + Heels

Give your sweaters and sweatshirts a rest. It’s time to pull your most exciting blouse (we’re talking ruffles, peplums or ties) out of your closet and rock it with your fave basic black leggings. Even if you’re wearing this look for a day of WFH Zoom meetings, finish your outfit with a cute pair of sandals to really make this feel like a standout look.

Get the look: Aje Impression Top ($275); Koral Drive High Rise Blackout Legging ($95); BY FAR Kaia leather sandals ($408; $183)

6. Brown Leather Leggings + Camel Compliments

By this point, we all probably have a pair of black leather leggings in our arsenal, but it’s safe to say that a brown pair is much less expected. This is exactly why we love this casual but cute look from Olivia Jeanette that pairs the rich brown leather pants with complementary neutral tones throughout.

Get the look: Free People Lullaby Rib Beanie ($38); BB Dakota That Covers It Check Coat ($158; $63); Aqua Faux Leather High Waist Leggings ($68); Marc Fisher LTD Pirro Chelsea Boot ($199)

7. Blazer + Black Leggings + Patterned Booties

Wait, you might be thinking, I’ve worn this outfit before. But we suggest you look a little closer; specifically at how perfect our fave TikTok fashion star Remi Bader’s leather leggings look next to a textured bootie in the same color. It creates a long line, making your legs look like they go on for miles, while adding a hint of freshness to your go-to uniform. See, it’s the small things.

Get the look: Les Specs The Prince Sunglasses ($89); Electric Picks Idol Hoops ($68); 11 Honoré Adora Blazer ($598); Summersalt The Long Sleeve Day to Night Bodysuit ($55); Marc Jacobs The Mini Pillow Bag ($450); Commando Women's Perfect Control Faux Leather Leggings ($98); Silent D Washer Embroider Boot ($225; $179)

Retire: Peplum Blouse + Pvc Leggings

Aside from the not-so-cute noise that PVC leggings make, they’re just so damn hard to pull off. And when worn with a peplum top and heels, the entire outfit feels very over-the-top and not fresh for 2021. Suffice it to say, we’re giving you permission to retire the least comfortable leggings outfit in your arsenal.
