mall brands we love CAT
Abby Hepworth for PureWow

I love the mall. Not just love, I adore the mall. I can often be found lamenting the loss of American malls, a third space where 12-year-olds with a measly $20 could entertain themselves for hours. But in recent years there has also been reason to celebrate, as a number of beloved old-school mall brands have made their comebacks in the digital age. J.Crew managed to reinvent itself in a post-Jenna Lyons world, returning to the classic preppy vibes of the ‘90s and early aughts. And GAP has been slowly but surely transforming from “great place to snag inexpensive basics” to must-have status under the guidance of Creative Director Zac Posen.

As a fashion editor, I’m tasked with examining brands that run the gamut, from tiny artisan designers just getting their start to the latest haute couture collections from ancient fashion houses. And included in that range are heritage mall brands, the names we associate most with brick-and-mortar stores and affordable price ranges. (This being the 2000s definition of “affordable” fashion, before fast fashion behemoths like Shein tricked us into thinking all clothing should cost less than $25.) I cannot tell you how elated I am to see a handful of these names making major returns in 2025. Because the truth is that I never stopped loving or shopping them. So whether you’re discovering them for the first time, or revisiting them after an online-only shopping hiatus, I’m here to share four of my favorite mall brands, plus exactly what to buy from each to impress all your most fashionable friends.

Rothy’s Just Launched a Heel, So 5 PureWow Editors Put It to the Test

1. Banana Republic

High school me would categorize Banana Republic as the place to go for tailored separates I could wear to my once-a-semester band concert. And while I still highly recommend them for tailored pieces, they have gotten way cooler since then (as have I) with more of an eye toward trends. The elegant simplicity of BR’s best-sellers reminds me of The Row—quality fabrics in simple silhouettes, perhaps with a slight twist here or there to ensure you stand out without needing to scream out. And if you are in the market for workwear, the blazers, trousers and office-appropriate dresses are definitely worth the investment.

Where to Start: Dresses and knitwear. Banana Republic really aces the art of designing a dress that can work for numerous occasions. Think mock-neck minis, silk midis and graceful sweater dresses that can be worn for weekend lunch with friends, weekday meetings with your boss or dinner/drinks out on the town. Speaking of sweaters, the knitwear is also fantastic. The various fabric blends all feel fantastic, with options for classic crewneck pullovers, trendy zip-up cardigans and super-cozy, cropped, chunky turtlenecks.

2. LOFT

The vast majority of my wardrobe consists of pieces that are comfortable, slightly more exciting than your absolute basic pieces and good for both office visits and errand running. LOFT nails this category of clothes and accessories right on the head, with the added bonus that almost everything is under $150. The jackets, dresses and jeans are easy to mix and match with so many different aesthetics, and feel cute and compliment-worthy without going too far into the land of pure trend. LOFT also houses the Lou & Grey line, a range of elevated loungewear with a similarly accessible price point and wildly comfortable materials. Plus, many of LOFT’s designs also come in petite sizes, with some pants also available in tall.

Where to Start: Loungewear. Nothing will ever beat the Lou & Grey Signaturesoft line when it comes to comfort, in my book. But they also come in sleek silhouettes that are elegant enough to wear everywhere, as well as cute patterns that are not too kitschy as to feel juvenile.

3. Ann Taylor

I like to think of Ann Taylor as LOFT’s supremely chic older sister. The two are owned by the same parent company, so have some definite similarities when it comes to style. But Ann Taylor stands out to me as a place to get some of the greatest affordable workwear on the market, as well as my go-to spot for fun accessories that feel posh and modern and that won’t break the bank. The whole brand gives me such Kate Middleton vibes, in the best way possible, and is particularly great at color and pattern. Plus, they have petite sizing for almost all pieces. Speaking of sizing, I find most items fit true to size, though some occasionally run a smidge large. But luckily there is a devoted AT following that often leaves very helpful reviews to help you decide which size or color is best to add to your shopping cart.

Where to Start: Pants. Whether you want solid work trousers that will last you for years or are on the hunt for something that feels elevated-yet-cool for weekends, AT has is all. It also has petite and tall sizes, as well as curve-friendly fits designed specifically for those with a greater hips-to-waist ratio.

4. White House Black Market

I won’t lie, White House Black Market was not a brand I shopped often back in my mall rat days. But after the brand’s PR team reached out a few years back, I found myself delighted by the surprisingly cool pieces WHBM now offers. The tailored separates would make for a very strong work capsule wardrobe, and there are lots of really sleek basics to choose from, but there are also a number of sneakily edgy designs. These are the pieces that feel instantly cool when mixed in with my existing wardrobe—like this this bustier top or this asymmetrical knee-length skirt. WHBM is also a great place to find fun cocktail attire that’s neither too showy nor too basic.

Where to Start: Tops. WHBM has a phenomenal range of basics, like bra-friendly tanks, cozy cardigans and knit T-shirts, but it’s the blouses and specialty tops that are my favorites. Each piece combines classic silhouettes with unique detailing—like a pleated ruffled all down the front of a button-up blouse or corset seams on a pullover sweater—that makes them look far more expensive than they really are.
