Now that most people are back in-office either partially or fully, finding office-appropriate outfits is always top of mind. But just because something is meant for business, doesn't mean it has to be boring. And right now, all signs are pointing toward Katie Holmes for workwear inspo.

Last weekend, Katie Holmes was photographed at the Patou Menswear Fall-Winter 2025/2026 show during Paris Fashion Week. The Alone Together actress wore an oversized blue button-down with white stripes, but what struck me as unique was the way she chose to style the top. Worn backwards with a pleat in the front, the collar popped to create a faux turtleneck and the sleeves long, uncuffed and over the hands, the reversed shirt put a visually interesting twist on the classic button-down look. By adding metallic accents, buttons and charms, as well as pairing the top with a pair of brown pants and a navy top-handled bag, Holmes created an eclectic-yet-polished ensemble from a tried-and-true closet staple.

Finding ways to alter the way traditional garments are worn can give new life to older pieces. That being said, I sourced some incredible tops to wear that put a fresh spin on classic button-downs. I'm talking feminine cinched-waist details, sharp shoulders, cutouts, the works. This ASTR the Label Elswyth Top ($88), for one, is truly calling my name. Read ahead to shop five distinctive designs that give classic work shirts a fresh identity.

This striped top forgoes the buttons altogether to supply some serious feminine flair via a twist-front drape across the bust. It's finished with a removable tie that you can cinch in at the waist for a super flattering fit. And worry not—despite the nontraditional styling, the V-neck is just high enough to work as a modest office option.

The Tobie Blouse from Anthropologie is the statement piece everyone at the office will ask you about. With exaggerated short sleeves, a statement collar and waist-defining pleats, this striped number will take your look to the next level, adding some extra volume, dimension and texture to an otherwise plain outfit.

Not-your-mother's-shoulder-pads. Even with its sharp shoulder and more severe cut, the Elswyth top from ASTR The Label manages to put a modern twist on an '80s aesthetic. Think Princess Diana on vacation in 2025. Tuck it into some straight-leg jeans for something a little more cool and casual during the summer months.

This darted halter button-down has a defined fit at the waist that flares out in a slightly peplum fashion, along with a flirty open back that ties with a bow. While it may be a little too taboo for your office if worn solo, you can totally cover it up with a cozy cardigan or blazer, then slip it off for a chic post-work cocktail look.

This asymmetrical number from LOFT is the traditional button-down's topsy turvy sister. With an off-center collar and button-front as well as a wide neckline, this cotton-blend top is incredibly eye-catching and makes for a great statement piece to add to your workwear rotation.
