There are few red carpet events more surprising than the annual Met Gala, and this year has proven no exception. And while I certainly didn’t anticipate so many celebrities wearing black, nor did I expect to see a dress made of wallpaper, it was Challengers star Josh O’Connor’s choice of footwear that shocked me above all else. Because, really, who would think to wear floral gardening clogs to the Super Bowl of fashion?
This Star Wore Gardening Clogs on the Met Gala Red Carpet and I Think I Love It?
Taking high-low to the extreme
The 33-year-old O’Connor is currently starring alongside Zendaya and Mike Faist (West Side Story) in the sexy tennis film, Challengers. Perhaps inspired by Zendaya’s incredible parade of tour outfits to promote the movie, O’Connor opted to pair a custom couture Loewe suit with a very unexpected shoe indeed—floral gardening clogs. And I think I kind of love it.
The shoe itself plus the print are a cheeky nod to the Met Gala’s dress code, “The Garden of Time,” that feels far less obvious and way more fun than most people’s draped flower dresses or sand-inspired gowns. In fact, I’d argue O’Connor’s ensemble better captured the dress code and theme of the night than most other stars to hit the red (technically green) carpet. At the very least, I know he’ll be comfortable and ready to dance once the musical performances begin later in the evening.
