As any admirer of French fashion knows, at its core, true Parisian style is all about the basics. French cobblestones aren’t flooded with haute couture as much as they’re littered with comfy tees, luxe denim and some of the best walking sneakers on the market. The fashionistas of France have mastered the art of taking a basic and elevating it into something incredibly chic. For example: the silk skirt. If you ask me, it’s an extremely underrated and versatile piece that everyone should have at least one of. Silk or satin, a midi or maxi skirt is bound to turn heads. So, if you’ve ever wondered how to incorporate a silk skirt into your wardrobe rotation, I’ve laid out five ways that you can easily style it—the Parisian way, of course.

10 Essentials That Build a French Capsule Wardrobe, According to a Parisian Woman

1. Keep It Casual with a Knit Top and Sneakers

There’s nothing wrong with going the causal route, as the French love their simplicities. Pairing a silk skirt with a trusty tee and your favorite sneakers is a great way to style it without any fuss. Take a page out of the style book of the fashionista above and wear a midi skirt in a deep burgundy hue with Adidas samba sneakers and a Brenton sailor striped shirt (another tailored item the French can’t get enough of). Can't forget the pièce de résistance: a subdued luxury handbag to tie it all together.

2. Go Cozy with a Sweater and Loafers

With fall approaching, it’s time to start dusting off that knitwear at the back of your closet. A slim-fit sweater goes well with everything, including a silk midi. Honestly, why wait until fall? With the right skirt length and sweater, this look would be perfect for late summer, just when the weather starts to cool. Don’t forget the loafers—and Gen Z-approved socks.

3. Use a Silk Skirt as a Pop of Color

Silk skirts come in so many variations. Prints, bold shades and a whole lot more than just your typical blacks and nudes. So, if your existing wardrobe leans more toward neutrals and you want to add a pop of color, consider investing in a non-neutral silk skirt. Above, the pink isn’t distracting but instead complements the black polo top and simple accessories. Talk about a head-turner.

4. Mix a Slinky Skirt with a Tailored Vest

Ah, yes. The oh-so-versatile vest. I’m sure folks are tired of me talking about the importance of a good vest, but I just can’t help it. They go with almost anything you may have in your closet *and* work for any occasion—stepping out for the day, the office or even a night out—it’s the ultimate fashion chameleon. Pairing it with a silk skirt is so stylish and you’ll instantly look incredibly polished.

5. Dress Up a Classic Button-Down

Everyone should have a white button-down in their closet, and if you don’t, it’s time to get one—STAT. Much like the silk skirt, they’re universally loved and the epitome of style. And together, the two pieces make for the perfect outfit combo. What’s great about the button-down is not only can you pair it with literally any bottom (and still look put together), but you can also style it anyway, and it switches your look instantly. For example, the fashion week attendee above casually wears the shirt loosely buttoned with a (ahem) French tuck and loafers. If you wanted a more structured look, you could tuck it in completely or maybe go for a slimmer-fit top.
