Guide to Reformation Jeans universal

I’ll be the first to admit, online shopping for the best jeans requires a lot of patience and ample trial and error, which is why I wanted to make the process a whole lot easier. I consider myself a jean aficionado, having quite an assortment of Agolde, Frame and Abercrombie & Fitch denim, to name a few, but I’m also a big fan of Reformation’s denim collection. Last year, I compared the Abby and Cynthia jeans against each other after months of testing…and their list of denim styles goes well beyond those two stars. That’s why I headed to my local Reformation store to try on the pieces for myself to gauge the fit, feel, quality and sizing of all the popular styles, like the Cynthia silhouette ($168), which just might be the best jeans for short women or the brand’s best-selling Cary jeans ($168) that I almost left with in every colorway. Below, I tested and reviewed every pair the brand had in store to map out your ultimate guide to Reformation jeans, with pictures of me wearing them.

You’ll notice that the Reformation jeans featured on this list are all priced at $168. However, some styles may vary in price depending on the design and any embellishments. While the brand’s denim collection extends beyond the six styles I tried on below, these were the options available to me in person. I made sure to try on every style in my usual size 27 for an honest opinion how each jean varies in fit. I’ve made an effort to break down the fabric blend, highlighting how it might influence the feel and fit.

Though I’m already quite familiar with the brand’s denim, Elena, a helpful sales associate, walked me through each design and pointed out their unique details. She also shared insights into the styles that customers tend to love most. One thing we both agreed on: While each pair of jeans has a designated cut, shape and fit, some washes may fit differently due to the color and treatment of the fabric. For example, white or lighter washes tend to offer more stretch compared to a baby blue. Keep this in mind before diving into the breakdown below.

Best Straight-Leg Jeans

1. Val ‘90s Mid-Rise Straight Jeans

Reformation

Reformation’s Val jeans are the brand’s most popular style among customers. With a true straight-leg silhouette and a mid-rise fit, these relaxed jeans are known for their unbeatable comfort and timeless appeal. The pair I tried on had a modern raw-cut hem, giving the denim a grungy vibe rather than a traditional look, but there are also versions with a classic stitched hem. The Val ‘90s come in a wide variety of styles, colors and patterns, including options with embroidered details. And the fabric blend is incredibly soft, making them feel luxurious to the touch, to the point where I’d consider sizing down for a more structured, fitted look.

While my usual size fit just fine, I did notice a slight gaping at the back, so if you’re between sizes, I’d recommend sizing down, as these jeans tend to stretch with wear (though they’ll return to their original shape after washing).

Best Wide-Leg Jeans

2. Cary High-Rise Slouchy Wide-Leg Jeans

Reformation

The Cary is one of the most popular styles at Reformation behind the Val jeans. (Even the sales associate was wearing them when I walked into the dressing room.) The wide-leg stunners are designed with a high-rise fit and relaxed silhouette throughout the waist, hips and thigh—hence the wide-leg aspect. As soon as I slipped these jeans on, I knew my wallet was in trouble. While the fabric has zero stretch like your favorite vintage jeans, I found it to be so unbelievably conformable, non-constricting and very true to size. Perhaps that’s because it’s made from a blend of regeneratively grown cotton and Tencel lyocell, together giving it the denim a super-soft quality that felt smooth against my skin.

The sales associate and I gushed about them for a few minutes, and she did mention to me that she had to get hers hemmed to fit her shorter stature, and they are rather long, even on my 5’7” self. Though I’m always of the mindset where I’d rather have to tailor something to fit my proportions than wear something that looks like it shrunk in the wash.

  • Size Range: 23 to 34
  • Colors: 12

Best Low-Rise Jeans

3. Reformation Cary Low-Rise Slouchy Wide-Leg Jeans

Reformation

The Cary low-rise jeans are nearly identical to the previous Cary jeans, just made into a low-rise, slouchy style. I absolutely adored the dark wash of these—a subtle detail that really elevated the whole look and feel. The main difference between these and the original style is how this pair sits on the body. For one, they’re a low-rise style, coming just below the belly button for me, but it’s important to note that this will differ according to your torso length.

They’re also made to have a slouchy silhouette that made these feel even more comfortable than the original pair (crazy, I know). I’m not usually one for a low-rise cut, but I didn’t mind these because of their comfort, look and feel. Plus, the slouchy style and 32-inch inseam managed to keep my legs looking extra-long.

Best Vintage Jeans

4. Reformation Cynthia High-Rise Straight Jeans

I’m no stranger to the Cynthia jeans, having owned a few pairs myself. A true slim-fit silhouette, the Cynthia jeans are as close as you'll get to finding a vintage-style pair at Reformation. It's one of the brand’s few styles with a button-fly closure, enhancing that classic look and feel. Speaking of feel, these jeans have a rigid yet comfortable quality and are designed to hug the waist, hips, and bum before tapering at the legs.

They run true to size, so I wouldn't recommend sizing down, as they don't have much give. However, the sales associate mentioned that many Reformation customers opt to size up for a more relaxed silhouette—something to keep in mind, especially if you're on the taller side. Petites or anyone with shorter legs will appreciate the shorter inseam, though it’s available in three inseam lengths: 27, 29, and 33 inches.

Best Jeans with Stretch

5. Reformation Jax Stretch High-Rise Straight Jeans

Reformation

Now if you’re wondering what’s the difference between these, the Jax, and the aforementioned, cult-favorite Val jeans, you’re not the only one. While they both boast a classic straight-leg silhouette, the Jax jeans differ in a few ways. It all comes down to this style’s stretch denim fabric, which is comprised of organic cotton, Tencel Lyocell and EcoLycra. With a slightly different ratio and the addition of the EcoLycra—you can think of this like a sustainable spandex—these jeans will offer more stretch while also hugging your hips and waist well.

I actually found them to fit more rigid on my body compared to the Val ‘90s, perhaps because these have a higher percentage of cotton to give it that true denim feel. What I noticed after stepping out of the dressing room and walking around a bit was that the style felt slightly constricting around the waist, so I would size up next time for a comfortable fit. As an avid boot wearer, I did really like the loose, straight fit around the legs that would accommodate plenty of shoe styles.

Fast Facts

  • Materials: 64 percent organic cotton, 35 percent Tencel lyocell, 1 percent EcoLycra
  • Size Range: 23 to 34
  • Colors: 4
  • Inseam: 31 inches

Best Baggy Jeans

6. Reformation Rui Lived-in Wide-Leg Baggy Jeans

Reformation

When it comes to a baggy style, Reformation’s Rui jeans take the cake. They’re a proper wide-leg style that has a lived-in, loose feel. They’re made from a blend of organically grown cotton and Tencel lyocell, which gives them a super soft feel, unlike a total cotton blend, and lightweight quality that’s beyond comfortable on. Honestly, the Rui style kind of reminded me of the viral sweatpant jeans everyone was just buzzing about. I even wrote in my notes app that I would, without a doubt, wear these on a ten-plus hour plane ride (and I’m being totally serious).

One thing I want to mention is that recommend looking at the size guide before buying, as I found myself contemplating sizing down after seeing that there was some gaping at the back—though you can always embrace the baggy style. This is the type of denim that will loosen overtime with consistent wear, but the moment you wash them they will bounce back to the original fit.

Fast Facts

  • Materials: 60 percent organically grown cotton, 40 percent Tencel lyocell
  • Size Range: 23 to 34
  • Colors: 2
  • Inseam: 31 inches
