The trend I am by far most excited about this summer is the Fisherman Aesthetic. Inspired by the hardworking coastal fishermen of the Mediterranean, this Pinterest-predicted movement is all about combining practical pieces with touches of whimsy. Think cargo pants worn with a sardine-print tank top, or a yellow rain jacket styled with a lavender net tote. And at the core of this wonderfully fun aesthetic is the fisherman sandal.

These leather, open-weave sandals have been steadily gaining popularity over the past few years, but I expect them to reach their peak in summer 2025. After The Row introduced a classic black version in 2019, those and similar designs have since been spotted on the likes of Katie Holmes, Hailey Bieber and more stylish celebs. And I have to admit, trends aside, fisherman sandals are kind of the ultimate summer shoe. The open silhouette makes them more breathable than any flats or sneakers, but the closed front means I won’t feel self-conscious about the state of my unpolished toes. They’re as classic as a sandal gets, and even when we’ve all moved on from dressing like Jacques Cousteau, they won’t look totally dated or out of place. And they’re an infinitely better sea-inspired shoe choice than boat shoes.

If you’ve yet to invest in your own dependable Holmes-approved style, have no fear. Here, you’ll find 12 of the best fisherman sandals money can buy for a chic, comfortable and always practical summer.

This timeless design is made of a super-supple leather that requires no breaking in to conform to your feet. Seriously, reviewers raves about how comfortable these sandals are straight out of the box, and most say they fit true to size. However, if you have wider feet or bunions, others do suggest going up a half size from your usual to avoid pinching. They’re currently available in four gorgeous colors—black, ivory and cognac brown leather, plus a camel-hued suede—that will work seamlessly in with any wardrobe.

For those who want a chunkier sole, this Dr. Martens pair combines the timeless upper design with a classic combat boot sole for a very cool final look. That rubber sole is incredibly supportive and great for all-day walking, though many reviewers note it is also a bit heavy. The leather straps do require some breaking in, but these are sandals that are built to last, so once you’ve put in that effort, you’ll be able to wear them blister-free for years and years to come. As for sizing, this style comes only in whole sizes, so if you typically wear a half size you’ll want to round down to the nearest whole number.

Polished and pretty, with the tiniest of heels, this sleek fisherman sandal looks far more expensive than its price tag. The cushioned footbed is also surprisingly comfortable given how thin it is. They’re currently available in brown and black, both with a gold buckle that has just the right amount of shine.

For a sportier vibe, try this Anthropologie style on for size. It comes in eight different colors, some with a suede upper and others with leather, but all feature the same rugged outsole for comfortable all-day wear. There’s even a leopard print version, as well as  woven raffia. Reviewers do say these sandals run a bit small, so you may want to go up one from your usual size when ordering.

I adore G.H.Bass loafers for their comfort and durability, so I feel confident these fisherman sandals will be just as fabulous this summer. The footbed is cushioned to give you some arch support, but there is no elastic in the ankle strap, meaning you may need to break these in a little bit before they conform to the shape of your feet. Because the sole is made of leather, some reviewers recommend taking some sandpaper to the bottom to improve the grip on those first few outings with your new sandals.

Patent leather adds just a hint of glam to this practical shoe silhouette in both brown and black. The ankle strap is fully adjustable, and the sole is also made of leather to guarantee durability. Wear these beauties with dark-wash denim or a black linen frock to keep those elevated summer vibes going strong.

If you have wide feet, ASOS has a great selection of wide-width shoes, including these chunky fisherman sandals for under $50. They come in taupe and black, both with an oversize silver buckle to add a touch of modernity to this timeless silhouette. And the rubbed lug sole will help keep you on your feet even when traversing a slippery boat deck.

For a more minimalist approach, try these Madewell beauties. They come in black leather or brown suede and have a lattice of much thinner straps than most fisherman sandals. And despite the delicate appearance, they also have the brand’s proprietary MWL Cloudlift Lite padding in the footbed to keep your arches happy throughout the day. Stick with your usual size for the most comfortable fit.

Petites, this one’s for you—a 2.8-inch block heel adds height without requiring a chunky lug sole and looks sleek and elegant on your feet. Choose between polished camel and patent navy, both of which go beautifully with everything from tailored trousers to denim midi skirts. Just know, Sezané recently updated its converted shoe sizing, so be sure to double check the size chart before you order

Available in black or white leather, these Reformation sandals are well worth the splurge for a sustainably-made sandal that will last for years. The straps are slightly wider than most designs, giving them more a ballet flat vibe. Like many of Reformation’s leather shoes, these do require some breaking in, but luckily Hailey Bieber has proven that wearing socks with sandals can actually look pretty cool now.

Add a little pep to your step with these lightweight, chunky Free People sandals. They come in three colors, black, taupe and off-white, and have a cushioned footbed to help support your arches alongside that lug sole. The leather upper is wonderfully flexible and lightweight, so your feet won’t overheat in the peak of summer.

For those who want to dip a toe into the trend (pun not intended) but aren’t ready to fully commit, why not try these chic backless mules? They have the same iconic woven leather as a classic fisherman sandal, but are easy to slip into and out of and look much slimmer on the foot without an ankle or heel strap. And while opting for black or brown would be easiest, I’m kind of loving the silver and gold colors to add a splash of glamour to any summer outfit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Fisherman Sandals Still Trendy?

Yes! Fisherman sandals are one of the top shoe trends for summer 2025, especially in light of the rising Fisherman Aesthetic. And while there are bound to be plenty of innovative new takes on the classic footwear, I highly suggest sticking with something that looks more like the OG designs. They’re more likely to stand the test of time and can be worn for years to come, rather than just months.

Why Are They Called Fisherman Sandals?

As you may have already guessed, the name “fisherman” sandals came about because of this style’s prevalence among fishermen. The open woven design makes it easy for water to drain out and for the shoes to dry in the sun, but covering the toes offers protection like a boot might. And the addition of a strap across the back ensure they won’t slip off your feet, even when walking on wet surfaces. Essentially, they’re an ideal summer shoe, whether you plan to spend time on the docks or not.
