Every year, Pinterest releases a list of up-and-coming trends it thinks are primed and ready to become the next big thing in the coming months. And it’s usually pretty spot on. It saw our 2021 devotion to decorating our homes in the Japandi style and our 2022 obsession with checkerboard prints way before I did. Which is why, as odd as it may seem, I’m here to tell you that in 2025 we’re all going to be rushing to copy the sartorial aesthetics of fishermen.

Yes, the Fisherman Aesthetic was called out as a trend to watch in this year’s Pinterest report, and I’ve already seen plenty of evidence to support the prediction. This past summer there was a charmingly bizarre influx of sardine-themed clothing and accessories, perhaps inspired by the rise of Fishwife, the cult-favorite tinned fish company. Staud’s “Staudine” Tommy bag  and Bottega Veneta’s sardine-handled woven-leather bags both caused a frenzy, selling out multiple times. I stumbled upon sardine-shaped chocolates at multiple NYC shops, got served countless ads for the Menstruation Crustacean on Instagram and continued to spot net totes everywhere I went, long after I thought they reached their peak in 2019.

Adjacent to all of this has also been the rise of capsule wardrobes, with a spotlight on simple classics like fisherman sandals, cableknit sweaters and all things striped. And with people seemingly taking an interest in more utilitarian outerwear, like the barn coat and Barbour jackets, it’s only a matter of time before rain jackets are given the opportunity to shine as a wardrobe staple that’s not just practical, but chic too. Heck, you could even argue that the bucket bag is contributing factor to our newfound fisherman obsession.

2025 will be the year we finally put these things all together to embody our alter egos as hardworking fishermen. The time has come to start adding pictures of Jacques Cousteau and Irish sailors to your Pinterest boards, and embracing the idea of pairing Welly boots with a chunky knit sweater and red beanie cap. And steel yourself for another round of mesh flats and bucket hats. Don’t be afraid to get a little cheeky with it—I plan to wear these anchovy-shaped earrings ($45) with anything and everything as a nod to my yet unfulfilled (and entirely unfounded) dreams of a life at sea.

Read on for 15 items you need to build your ideal Fisherman Aesthetic wardrobe and get ahead of the style curve for 2025.

A Billy Crystal-inspired cable knit sweater is a classic cold-weather wardrobe staple, especially for those who spend a good deal of time outdoors (like fishermen). This cotton/wool-blend version is slightly oversized for a super-cozy fit, and comes in both cream and charcoal gray. Just be sure to lay it flat to dry, as the heat from the dryer can cause shrinkage and damage the yarn.

  • Size Range: XS to 1X
  • Materials: 60 percent cotton, 30 percent nylon, 10 percent wool

Channel your inner Katie Holmes with a pair of strappy, leather fisherman sandals. The ankle strap gives them a good deal of support and prevents your feet from slipping around. And as a pretty lazy beauty person, I appreciate that my lack of a pedicure is less obvious in these sandals. P.S. This Bernardo style, made from super-soft leather, also comes in black.

FAST FACTS

  • Size Range: US 6 to 11
  • Materials: leather upper, rubber sole

Show off your catch of the day (aka the granola bars and block of cheese you just picked up at the supermarket) is in this brightly-colored net tote. It packs neatly into its own pocket so the weave won’t get caught on anything and risk a tear, and it comes in tons of fun colors like cherry red, olive green and mustard yellow, as well as a neutral off-white hue.

FAST FACTS

  • Materials: 100 percent cotton

Not quite ready to give into the pier pressure (sorry, not sorry) of adopting a whole new aesthetic? Give a cheeky nod to the trend with a chic pair of gold earrings shaped like koi fish with dainty garnet eyes. There is also a sterling silver option with blue topaz eyes, for the silver-loving crowd. Both are designed to move and sway like real fish as you move, but are still subtle enough to not scream “I’m super into fishermen these days,” if that’s not what you’re going for.

FAST FACTS

  • Materials: 18k gold-plated sterling silver with garnet stones

Can you ever have too many denim jackets? Yes, you can, but this chore coat version is just too cute to pass on. The rounded collar and minimalist design are oh-so chic. And the relaxed fit allows for layering underneath without needing to size up.

FAST FACTS

  • Size Range: XS to XL
  • Materials: 100 percent cotton

Not to be too on the nose, but this is called the Mariner sweater. It’s made of a gorgeous wool/cotton blend that has just the right amount of heft to drape beautifully without feeling too heavy. And those buttons along the shoulder? They’re fully functional, so you can unbutton a few to create a chic asymmetrical, off-the-shoulder silhouette if you like.

FAST FACTS

  • Size Range: XXS to XXXL
  • Materials: 55 percent wool, 45 percent organic cotton

A fun alternative to a Jacques Cousteau-inspired beanie cap is this retro-looking baseball cap made in collaboration with Le Sirenuse, an iconic hotel in Positano. The patch in front is an homage to the sirens of the sea, and there is an adjustable plastic strap at the back. The inside also features signatures and notes from famous guests of Le Sirenuse for a fun finishing touch.

FAST FACTS

  • Size Range: one size

The combination of the barrel shape and the very dark wash gives these jeans major fisherman vibes. That said, they also come in a lighter wash if you prefer. And while they come with the hems rolled up, they are not fixed that way, so you can unroll them for a longer inseam. The waist has a high rise, and reviewers say this style fits true to size.

FAST FACTS

  • Size Range: US 23 to 32
  • Materials: 100 percent cotton

No fisherman’s wardrobe would be complete without a dependable rain jacket. Bonus point if it’s in a bright color, too (easier to spot in inclement weather). Stutterheim makes incredibly classic rainwear in a wide range of colors (yes, including black), but the Stockholm silhouette is by far one of their best-selling styles for its easy cut and midi length.

FAST FACTS

  • Size Range: XS to XXL
  • Materials: 100 percent PVC rubberized coating over 100 percent polyester

The boatneck on this long-sleeve tee is incredibly elegant, and the stripes are a great width—noticeable without being too bold or too dainty. Reviewers also note how wonderful the fabric feels, saying it has a nice weight to it. “It is so soft and a great weight for warmer days, while being versatile enough to layer under blazers for cooler days,” writes one 5-star reviewer. “It isn’t as sheer as I feared and is very polished looking.”

FAST FACTS

  • Size Range: XXS to 3X
  • Materials: 70 percent viscose, 30 percent wool

There are tons of Wellies out there to fit any and all styles, but my heart will always belong to the OG Hunter tall rain boots. They’re surprisingly comfortable, though I do recommend wearing them with tall socks or boot liners for maximum comfort. And they’re also incredibly durable—I have a yellow pair that I’ve worn for ten years and counting and, other than a few marks, they look and feel as good as the day I bought them. Just know, these boots come only in whole sizes, so if you typically wear a half size, you’ll likely want to round up to the nearest whole number.

FAST FACTS

  • Size Range: US 5 to 11 (whole sizes only)

Yes, a bright red beanie cap is a very literal nod to Cousteau and the crew of Wes Anderson’s The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, but red is also a super-trendy color for 2025, and a warm woolen hat is a must-have for any winter capsule wardrobe. So really, this hat isn’t just a fisherman-approved, trendy purchase, it’s also a smart investment piece you’ll wear for years. Add to that the fact that this beauty is made of recycled Merino wool, which will keep you warm even when wet, and you’ve got yourself a no-brainer add to cart.

FAST FACTS

  • Size Range: one size
  • Materials: 100 percent recycled Merino wool

Another fun nod to this Pinterest trend is in the form of a kitschy bag charm. This one comes with two fish-shaped charms, a blue heart and a striped rope, all of which affix to the handle of your handbag with an easy-to-open carabiner clip.

FAST FACTS

  • Size Range: 8.5-inches long

I’m obsessed with this fashion-minded twist on a classic fisherman’s vest as a way to embrace the trend without going too literal. It’s made of a super-lightweight polyester fill, and has two large flap pockets at the front. The cut is boxy and a bit oversized, but not so large that you’d need to size down. And the round, collarless neck allows you to easily layer a scarf or handkerchief for some sea-worthy flair.

FAST FACTS

  • Size Range: US 2 to 14
  • Materials: 100 percent cotton

Choose from washed red, blue, green or orange stripes for these patchwork pants. They have a barrel silhouette and the waist comes with an attached ripe belt to cinch you in. Although the brand describes these as a low-rise pant, reviewers say they fit more like a mid rise. Reviewers also say these run a bit large, so if you’re between sizes, you may want to opt for the smaller of the two.

FAST FACTS

  • Size Range: US 24 to 33
  • Materials: 99 percent cotton, 1 percent elastane
