Earlier this week I was reading an essay from Aemelia Madden’s Substack talking about her “personal style” and how, despite being a person who works in fashion, it is an ever evolving thing and is sometimes pretty boring. The concept of personal style has been a hot one in recent months and I whole-heartedly agree with Madden’s thoughts. She writes, “There’s a place to challenge ourselves to be a little more purposeful, but there’s also a place to look in the mirror and gently scream “snap out of it” when it’s taking up more mental real estate than it should. It’s OK to sometimes go about life in an unremarkable outfit, there are plenty of people who do so without thinking twice about it!” The best way to find your personal style is simply to go out and live your life, let the clothes find you, take stock of what makes you feel good, pay attention to how clothing fits in with your everyday. And know that not every day needs to be your best fashion moment.

One of the best habits I’ve developed in the past few years is to take photos of outfits I love when I discover them. They don’t need to be photos you’d happily post on social—so many of mine have piles of dirty laundry and spare socks in the background—but just for you to reference when you’re having one of those “I have nothing to wear” kind of days. It can also help you to realize things like “oh wow, I’m kind of obsessed with sweater vests aren’t I?” or “I really love how I look in the color green.” Sometimes the thought process behind an outfit is nuanced and complex, but other times it’s just me full on copying a cute ‘fit I found on Pinterest. Either way, I thought I’d share a week’s worth of outfits with you and the feelings behind them to perhaps inspire your own outfit rotation.

Sunday: A Break From Denim with Pops of Color

Like many, I tend to spend most of fall and winter wearing nothing but jeans and cozy sweaters. But I was getting really sick of my denim lately, so decided to break out these checked Everlane trousers and see if I can style them in just as many ways as my trusty straight-leg jeans. A simple black sweater is never a wrong choice, plus it allowed me to have some fun playing with more colorful accessories, like these colorblocked New Balance kicks and a purple-and-pink Strathberry bag I bought secondhand on The RealReal. Add to that some funky jewelry and a demure gray wool coat, and I think this is an outfit I’d happy repeat through the rest of winter.

Monday: Double Denim at the Office

In another effort to break out of my habit of simply slipping in some jeans and a sweater and calling it a day I decided to try…different denim? I recently acquired this adorable duo from Levi’s of a coordinating maxi skirt and cinched denim jacket, and while they weren’t necessarily intended to be worn as a set, I really love how both pieces play with volume in a way that feels dramatic without being too over the top. I was also elated when, on my commute to the office, a random woman on the subway complimented my outfit.

Tuesday: Simple Basics with Funky Boots

Some days, you just have to return to the basics. I had a lot to get done this day, so didn’t really have time to play around with interesting colors or silhouettes. This Aritzia wool cardigan is supremely comfy, but the collar adds some interest to make the whole thing feel a smidge more elevated. And while I would normally have just slipped into some retro sneakers, I’m glad I swapped in these Loeffler Randall tight-print boots instead. The color is just so good with that mini Longchamp bag and made me feel a little more fun.

Wednesday: Preppy Pastels for Morning Appointments

I’ve been rewatching the show Sex Lives of College Girls on Max lately, and while I definitely want to copy some of the looks featured on the four leading ladies, this time around it was a different character’s look that felt most inspiring to me. Evangeline, played by Sierra Katow, is a cool older student and comedy writer with Bela with a signature style that consists of lots of Peter Pan collar sweaters, hair bows and preppy silhouettes that somehow don’t feel overly prim. So I decided to channel my inner Evangeline with a polo collar sweater, pleated midi skirt and pearl earrings. Of course, I forgot it was peak February, so after I got back home from my morning appointments I rapidly changed into sweatpants. But I also added a hair bow, so there.

Thursday: Tonne Goodman Cosplay

I finally got around to starting the Hulu docuseries In Vogue; The ‘90s recently, and while there is a lot to say about the revelations of that series, one thing that really stood out to me was the fact that so many of the big industry names interviewed clearly stick to a uniform of sorts. This is my attempt at an homage to Tonne Goodman, a long-time Vogue fashion editor who seems somewhat obsessed with neck scarves. Her “uniform” appears to consist of tailored trousers, button-up shirts layered over another top and a silk scarf tied artfully around her neck. It was fun trying to copy such an icon’s sense of style, and although I’m not quite sure I nailed it, it was a good experiment in mixing things up.

Friday: Copied from Pinterest

While reviewing the adorable Strathberry bag pictured here, I spent a lot of time scrolling through the brand’s Instagram to see how they style their models to complement their designs. This is my attempt at recreating an outfit from Strathberry’s collaboration with Shrimps back in September 2024, a campaign I adored. I am a big fan of straight up copying outfits I see that make my heart sing. It’s a great way to shop your own closet and potentially find new combinations you might not have otherwise come up with on your own. It’s also a phenomenal way to learn how to break down the elements of an outfit, paying attention to things like proportions, fabric and fit in addition to the more obvious things like silhouette or color.

Saturday: My New Uniform

Introducing my new go-to winter outfit! Whenever I wake up and don’t know what to wear, this is the exact outfit I reach for. I spend ages hunting down the perfect red sweater vest after seeing one styled in look I loved on Pinterest and finally found this beauty at Boden. The color is bold, beautiful and right on trend, and I know I’ll find tons of ways to style it for spring as well. It’s really the accessories here that make me feel put together—wavy hoops from Missoma, a chunky heart necklace from Jenny Bird, a gold buckle belt from Aritzia and ample bag charms to zhuzh up my Madewell work tote. This is my version of lazy chic, and a look my friends and family are bound to see hundreds more times this year.
