It’s the most wonderful time of the year and there’s no better place to celebrate it than New York City. But while my social calendar might be heating up, the temps are doing the complete opposite. Luckily, as a New Yorker, I’m well-versed in the art of picking the right outerwear—in fact, I’d argue that it’s just another opportunity to show off my personal style. Here are a few of my favorite styling tips for a tried-and-true New York winter, plus shoppable products from quintessential NYC brand DKNY, so you can get the look yourself.
Style Tip #1:
Stand out from the crowd in a colorful jacket
As a New Yorker, I’m totally obsessed with the color black. (See outfits two and three.) But there’s plenty of room in my heart—and maybe even my closet—for color. This holiday, that means the brighter, the better thanks to this coated satin yellow puffer. Yellow has been making a landgrab this year in terms of fashion trends. In general, it’s often seen as difficult to wear but I promise it’s not—it’s all about finding the right shade for your skin tone and this rich hue is just that. Not to mention, it’s got the right amount of “puff” (not too big) and is cropped perfectly for pairing with high-waisted denim. For accessories, women all across the city agree: You can’t go wrong with a large tote. I love switching between the detachable crossbody strap and the top handle on this one. I’m calling this my go-to street style look—emphasis on the style.
Style Tip #2:
Invest in the ultimate day-to-night wool coat
The best NYC outfit hack? A timeless black coat that instantly enhances whatever you’re wearing underneath. And while throwing it on over track pants for coffee is a regular occurrence, I’ll be donning this DKNY mid-length wool number with a satin slip dress and patent leather platform boots for holiday soirees and events of all sorts—including my annual viewing of The Nutcracker at Lincoln Center. No matter the trend, I always recommend focusing in on the details. In this case, the coat’s slightly off-center zipper gives it a unique twist…and you can’t be mad at a collar that zips all the way up to protect against that brisk city weather.

Style Tip #3:
Give a fresh spin to a cold-weather classic
In NYC, owning a black puffer jacket is practically a rite of passage. But this holiday season, I’m upgrading my reliable winter ‘fit (aka leggings and a turtleneck sweater) with this fun faux-leather version. I love that it has both a zipper and snap closure, but I also plan to wear it open with a super-thick hoodie underneath. I’m topping off the look with black sunnies while shopping on Ludlow or pairing it with tights and a mini for the seasonal midnight flick at Metrograph. It’s the perfect iteration of all my favorite holiday season outfits: warm and toasty, but so effortlessly cool that other people can’t help but ask: Where did you get that?

It’s official: Thanks to these covetable outerwear picks, I’m beyond ready for a booked and busy holiday season in NYC—not to mention the winter months that follow. And while I’ve already added these pieces to my wardrobe, there are plenty more of-the-moment looks from DKNY I have my eye on. (I highly suggest their entire holiday collection, TBH). Cheers to a fun, memorable and seriously stylish holiday, my fellow New Yorkers.
