I was out for post-work drinks the other day when I brought up the most talked about shade of the year: Burgundy. What usually turns into a chat on which celeb or royal donned the color of the moment—that’d be Kate Middleton, if you were curious—instead turned into a discussion about how best to describe the most talked about hue. “I once heard burgundy described as a navy red,” my friend said. I laughed, immediately thinking how ridiculous that sounded, but after sitting with it, felt the statement was rather profound for a color that’s become a chameleon in the closet, shapeshifting from a neutral to a pop of color in a matter of seconds. So, was it this mystery behind the wine-stained shade that made the burgundy color trend so alluring, or was it a step away from last season’s cherry red that felt like a breath of fresh air?

Perhaps it’s both at the end of the day, with people moving away from summer brights and into autumnal and winter-inspired motifs. Influences from luxury fashion houses like Gucci, Miu Miu and Saint Laurent keep the burgundy agenda alive and well, and I don’t see that influence dwindling anytime soon, especially as celebrities like Taylor Swift and Katie Holmes sport the shade. And just take a look at your favorite affordable shopping retailer, whether it be Amazon or J.Crew, and I guarantee you’ll stumble across a few burgundy-colored items…if they’re not already sold out.

With the allure over the burgundy color trend at a pinnacle, the good news is that it’s surprisingly easy to pull off. In fact, I broke down seven ways to style the color for 2025, from the simple addition of a pair of tights to an unexpected pairing for the bold.

1. Go All Out in a Monochrome Look

Royals and celebrities alike, from Princess Beatrice to Zendaya, are perfect examples of how to wear burgundy from head to toe with finesse. My rule of thumb is to treat this rich shade like you would your black basics—layering pieces or adding accessories that won't clash but will instead enhance the overall look. Best of all, no matter the tone of burgundy, you can be confident that they’ll complement each other when paired together. For added depth and dimension, experiment with mixing textures and finishes, as seen in the example above, which combines leather, silk and a chunky woven knit.

2. Incorporate Patterns

If you're looking to break free from a monochrome ensemble, try this simple outfit formula for a look that’s sure to turn heads. Known as "sandwich dressing," this trick can easily be applied to burgundy pieces in your wardrobe. The key is to pair a blouse and shoes in the same deep wine shade, then add a bold print or pattern in the middle for a playful contrast. Bonus points for incorporating burgundy accessories or bottoms with burgundy accents, as this will tie the look together and elevate your outfit.

3. Consider Burgundy Accessories

If you don’t have an abundance of burgundy pieces in your closet already, you can still pull off the color of the season with accessories that won’t break the bank, like a scarf or a pair of ballet flats. In other words, don’t feel pressured to buy a new wardrobe or splurge on a pricey coat—sometimes a Merlot-hued scarf is just enough.

4. Mix Burgundy with Bright and Unexpected Colors

Blues, browns and grays are a natural match for burgundy, but that doesn’t mean other color combinations can’t work just as well. In fact, I encourage you to experiment with bright, unexpected hues every now and then, especially if you have an event or party. The key is to stick to shades within burgundy’s color family, as well as colors opposite it on the color wheel, like chartreuse, for a striking and balanced contrast. As seen in the example above, the light pink doesn’t overpower the burgundy; instead, it strikes a perfect balance between soft and dark tones. Meanwhile, the pop of chartreuse adds a touch of personality and playfulness, elevating the overall look.

5. Introduce a Pop of Burgundy with a Pair of Tights

A pair of tights is one of the easiest ways to wear the burgundy color trend. It’s a super simple addition that allows you to keep wearing your favorite pieces all year round, including shorter options like dresses and mini skirts, while adding a stylish pop of color. Plus, the rich hue creates an elongating effect, making the look both chic and flattering.

6. Give Your Black Leather Jackets a Break

Thanks to the boho-chic comeback, burgundy leather jackets are more prominent than ever. A subtle yet striking alternative to your usual leather coat, burgundy outerwear can effortlessly elevate your outfit from mediocre to marvelous. I’ve also spotted stylists and fashionistas rocking the shade in sleek trenches and long wool coats, so I recommend investing in jacket styles that suit your personal taste and wardrobe needs.

7. Keep It Classy with Neutral Tones and Classic Silhouettes

Let’s channel our inner Kate Middleton and rock some burgundy trousers. This muted yet rich tone is surprisingly easy to style, often acting as a neutral, much like your favorite blue jeans or black trousers. When it comes to styling, try pairing them with a classic white collared blouse and a brown jacket, or mix things up with a chunky knit in a contrasting color or bold print for added flair.
