Building a capsule wardrobe is a fabulous way to avoid those frustrating “I have nothing to wear” moments. It’s comprised of versatile basics that can be mixed and matched with all the other pieces in your wardrobe, and also serves as a chic base for showcasing trendier items without looking too on the nose. And while the essentials remain the same no matter your body type, there are small changes and details that can take those classics from basic to fabulous and really complement your figure to the max. To determine what those nuances are for those among us who’ve been blessed with an ample bosom, I turned to the experts to ask what are the top items every women with big boobs needs in her capsule wardrobe. Here, six specific pieces for you to shop and tips on how to find the best versions to maximize your outfit potential.

Meet the Experts

  • Elizabeth Robitaille is a stylist at Stitch Fix. She has more than five years of experience finding the best pieces, whether classic or trendy, to help shoppers look and feel their best.
  • Shelby Goldfaden is the Director of Merchandising at M.M.LaFleur. She’s worked with the brand for more than eight years and has worked in the fashion industry, designing and marketing clothing for all body types, for more than 16 years.

How to Build a Capsule Wardrobe

“Ultimately, the most important aspect of building a capsule wardrobe is choosing pieces that make you feel like your best self,” says Robitaille. For women with big boobs, this may mean finding pieces that highlight and accentuate your chest, while for others it may mean seeking out styles that help downplay your bosom. “By focusing on well-fitted, quality basics that suit your body and lifestyle, you're not just accommodating your body type,” she explains, “you’re celebrating it.” For Goldfaden, the ideal capsule wardrobe is all about fit. “The key to styling wardrobe basics for women with fuller busts is finding the right fit and proportion.” Read on for their top six picks to add to your closet ASAP.

6 Big Boob Style Tips We Learned from Sydney Sweeney

1. Sleek Blazers

A timeless blazer can be worn as a part of a suit, as a jacket or as a top, like the image above, making it a wonderfully versatile piece to add to your capsule wardrobe. “When it comes to blazers, I suggest women with larger chests opt for a more fitted style, rather than something oversized,” advises Robitaille. An oversize fit can make the bust appear larger or swallow your figure whole if you’re forced to size up to ensure the buttons will close. Goldfaden recommends looking for something with a slimmer fit in materials that have some stretch. She explains, “A tailored blazer in a stretchy, forgiving material like ponte knit creates a polished, streamlined silhouette,” that works for just about any occasion.

2. Wide-Leg Pants

Wide-leg pants are trending as one of the most popular silhouettes at Stitch Fix,” notes Robitaille, “and this style is perfect for women with larger busts as they can help balance proportions. I love pairing wide-leg denim with a scoop or V-neck top that elongates the torso to complement a fuller bust.” Indeed, whether you prefer high rise or low, a wide-leg pant helps keep your proportions in check, especially if you add a contrasting belt at the waist. Different fabrics work best for different occasions—crepe wool for work, silk for cocktail parties, linen for weekend hangs—so feel free to add a whole slew of solid-hued pants to your collection to mix and match with all manner of tops.

3. Drapey Blouses

A great cotton T-shirt or tank top is always a good capsule wardrobe item to collect, but when you have a bigger bust it can be tough to find tops that fit your shoulders, chest and hips correctly. To supplement your top options, Goldfaden suggests looking at blouses that have a draped fit in soft fabrics that flow around your figure instead of clinging to it. “Button-down blouses and shirts in soft, fluid fabrics like silk are a must-have,” she explains. “They skim the body beautifully and can be dressed up or down [to fit whatever is on your calendar.]” As for necklines to prioritize, Goldfaden is a big fan of a classic V-neck. “Tops with V-necklines are particularly flattering for larger busts, as they create a vertical line that elongates the torso.”

4. Midi Dresses

Mid-length dresses are universally flattering, but they’re an especially great length for those with big boobs for much the same reason as wide-leg pants: They help to balance your proportions. And while you can certainly opt for whatever silhouette you find most comfortable, Goldfaden lists A-line cuts as a particularly great option for big busts. “They flow over the bust and nip in at the waist,” she notes. “And don't be afraid of bold colors or prints! They can actually be quite complementary for a fuller bust.”

5. Wrap Dresses

Another universally flattering item, wrap dresses are a definite must-have for larger chests. The adjustable silhouette allows you to better fit both your waist and your bust, and can be styled to either play up or down your features depending on your personal preference. As Robitaille notes, “These make great wardrobe staples for my more voluptuous clients, as they accentuate the waist, and you can adjust how much or how little cleavage you’re comfortable showing based on how you drape the top half of the dress over your chest.” Goldfaden is also a fan and recommends looking for wrap dresses in medium-weight fabrics to give them some structure. “The key is to choose styles that skim your curves without being too tight or boxy,” she explains. “They are incredibly flattering and can transition seamlessly from the office to after-work events.”

6. Button-Up Shirts

Button-front clothing can be incredibly frustrating for women with big boobs. In too many instances, the size that best fits your shoulders ends up pulling across your chest and causing gaping between the buttons, while the size that best fits your chest ends up looking far too oversize and boxy. But luckily there are so many more brands now—like PerfectDD and Pari Passu—that cater specifically to your fit needs, with styles designed with extra room in the bust to create a classically elegant button-up silhouette. “I advise clients with larger busts look for styles with darts, which will offer a better fit,” says Robitaille. If you’re still not finding quite what you’re looking for, I’ve found more success with button-ups designated as a “boyfriend” fit than classic or slim fits. They’re purposely cut to have more room in the torso (without also going big in the shoulders), which means you won’t necessarily need to size up in order to get the button placket to lie as it should.
