Best Suede Jackets for Women
Stephanie Meraz

Every autumn, like clockwork, I rush to dig up my denim and leather pieces, but this year is a little different as suede, one of the main fall fashion trends, is at the forefront of everyone’s mind. Sure, fashion week may have seen suede first, but all eyes are on Meghan Markle and Duchess Sophie adopting the fabric of the moment in recent outings. I don’t know about you, but I’ve seen countless renditions of suede bags and boots, but what I really want to see more of is suede jackets that can add some more variety and luxury to my outerwear collection. So, I did a little digging and compiled a list of the best suede jackets for women to shop this season, including trench coats, blazers and bomber jackets. Plus I chatted with a stylist, who answered some of the most important questions about the delicate fabric.

How I Chose the Best Suede Jackets for Women

In addition to chatting with Bibeau about suede, I researched hundreds of products and pored over hundreds of customer reviews to narrow down the best suede jackets for women. I also considered various occasions, style preferences, fits, lengths and price points, including faux-suede options as well as pieces that are crafted with genuine leather. Below, you’ll see 17 suede jackets that run the gamut of styles, with a few options that are machine washable.

Does it get any better than this suede finished goatskin leather jacket? I didn’t think so. Don’t underestimate the need for a slightly cropped jacket, people. Long trenches are great and all, but something about a piece that falls perfectly at your waist and the start of your trousers is satisfying. I know everyone’s obsessing over chocolate brown and camel-colored suedes right now, but this rich green is a unique breath of fresh air.

When I first saw this Richtrue jacket, I immediately thought about the Source Unknown suede jacket that Matilda Djerf recently wore. One major difference: That jacket costs nearly $1,000, while this faux-suede version is $60. Opt for one size up to pair it with mini dresses and tall boots or stay true to size and don it with off-white pants and a T-shirt.

Suede trench coats might be one of the most coveted styles of the seasons, namely because they’re effortlessly chic. This piece from Tommy Hilfiger is finished with a faux suede that I imagine is incredibly soft to the touch, and it has all the staple fixings of a traditional trench coat, like notch lapels, epaulets and the tie at the waist. It even has small shoulder pads to give it that extra bit of structure at the top.

For a more lived-in look, Zara’s high-collar jacket is not to be missed. Similar to a bomber jacket, this has a roomy, boxy silhouette that’s ideal for layering over sweaters or wearing slouchy atop a plain white T-shirt. There’s a hidden zipper beneath the button closures that provides extra insulation, though my favorite details are the front welt pockets and scrunched, elastic hem at the back.

Crafted from 100 percent genuine goat suede, this luxe zip-up jacket is as good as it gets. It has an oversize fit that’ll look great styled over several outfits, from a basic pair of jeans to a silk slip skirt and strappy heels. Because of its luxe nature, you’ll want to get this cleaned by a specialist to keep it looking brand-new, and consider spraying it with a suede protector to preserve the quality.

If you’re looking for a more affordable trench coat that won’t break the bank, then allow me to introduce you to this faux-suede beauty from Target that comes in heaps of colors. It melds both a vintage design with a moto silhouette, including notched lapels and edgy slant pockets. Buyers say it has a thin texture to it, so it might not be the warmest option. One customer says, “Beautiful, lightweight, soft coat option for spring or early autumn.”

Anyone else getting Bob Dylan vibes from this suede stunner by Dandy Del Mar? It has a minimalist design that’s both modern yet vintage looking, thanks to the back yokes, darts and welt pockets. I recently got my hands on the matching skirt, and boy oh boy is the suede on this buttery soft and dreamy. I had to force myself to stop touching it.

A few months ago, I splurged on this Reformation jacket, and while I was bummed I couldn’t immediately wear it in 90-degree California weather, I’m so excited to finally wear it during the cooler seasons. It’s made with a genuine suede that’s unbelievably soft to the touch, and I love how darling the chunky chrome buttons look. And the collarless design feels like a refreshing take on the It jacket of the season. It is designed to have a slim fit throughout, so I sized up for a comfortable fit that still allows me to move my arms freely with no restrictions.

If there’s one micro trend that has been stealing the spotlight this season, it’s studded leather, and this suede beauty boasts the coolest embellishment that’s bound to spice up any outfit. Yes, it’s pricey, but the genuine goatskin fabric is top-notch quality and, not to mention, soft. I find that the straight silhouette makes for a classic fit and style that’ll last beyond one trend cycle.

If you’re all about ‘90s minimalism, then you’re going to appreciate the streamlined, clean look of this. “I ordered this after I saw the leather version in store,” says a Madewell customer, who ordered her usual size. “It’s a beautifully soft suede and the color is the perfect neutral. The fit is slightly boxy, and I found the sleeve length to be a bit long. This will be a staple in my wardrobe.” What’s more, it has a clever two-way zip-front that’ll make styling this extra fun.

“This is a stylish, fully lined and very versatile coat,” notes Amazon shopper Kelley L. The sleek jacket has two functional pockets that are hidden, which will keep the design as streamlined as possible. I’m a big fan of how this looks like a rare vintage find, and I’m already dreaming about wearing it over a turtleneck blouse all season long. “[It has a] great fit—I'm six feet tall and wear an XL, so I'm constantly worried about the sleeve length, but this one is perfect. I get so many compliments on it,” she adds.

Behold, a “beautiful, sturdy suede,” jacket, as one Anthropologie reviewer notes. “[It’s] just as pictured with long a silhouette and structured shape. Probably better for someone [with a] straighter [figure as it] doesn’t enhance my curves with the longer length.” Whether you’re a cowboy core stan or appreciate movement and textured clothing, the Western-inspired fringe trim will surely capture your attention. “[It’s a] cool statement piece you can have for a lifetime,” they add.

A bomber jacket that has rave 5-star reviews? Yeah, I’ll take that any day. The best part is that it has a luxe faux-suede fabric that’s machine washable. Another feature I love: the ribbed knit cuffs and hems that’ll keep the jacket insulated and warm. “Love this jacket,” gushes one buyer. “The color is toasty warm and [it’s] perfect casual or dressy. [Plus, it’s] lined and finished perfectly inside! Don’t pass on this one!”

Here’s a suede jacket to take the place of your summer denim jacket. It’s one of the only pieces I’ve seen that’s crafted with 100 percent goat suede leather and $150. One customer says, “The shipping was really fast, and the jacket was packed with care. It feels like an expensive suede and it's really soft. I like that you can adjust the buttons in the back for a cinched look.”

If you could combine a trench and a blazer, I’d imagine this is what you’d get—a long silhouette with split cuffs and notch lapels. The hem ends just above the knees, making it a great length to pair with pants, miniskirts or dresses, and it comes with a removable belt, too.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Makes Suede Pricey and Luxurious?

“Suede is often considered pricey and luxurious due to several factors,” notes Bibeau, who tells me that it all comes down to the materials required. “Suede is typically made from high-quality animal hides, often from lamb or goats, which are more expensive than other types of leather. The tanning and finishing process for suede is more labor-intensive and requires specialized techniques to achieve its soft, napped texture.” As you may imagine, these factors up the cost of production and price points, but that usually ensures a high quality and luxury feel. Though there are plenty of imitation (aka faux suede) options to shop that can range anywhere from $40 to $200, depending on the blend.

How Should I Clean Suede?

With a great material comes great responsibility, and if you want to maintain your suede pieces, Bibeau recommends you follow a few steps. First: regular brushing. “Use a soft-bristle suede brush to gently lift the nap and remove dirt and dust. Brush in one direction to maintain the texture. [Second:] avoid water and keep suede away from moisture, as it can cause staining and damage. If it gets wet, let it air dry completely away from heat sources, then brush it gently to restore the nap.” Lastly, Bibeau notes that you’ll want to apply a suede protector spray—which will create a barrier against stains and water—on occasion to maintain the fabric.
