Knee-high boots will never go out of style, but if current shopping trends are any indication, they’re primed and ready to be one of the top boot styles of 2024. Riding boots are on the rise as part of this fall's heritage trend, and with Taylor Swift rocking the style on repeat lately (albeit with slightly more edge), knee-high boots are making a big comeback.

"Shoes are a way to invest in a trend without changing your whole wardrobe," says stylist Liz Teich. "The '90s aren't going anywhere with kitten heels and the return of the riding boot. We’re also still seeing western trend this fall, [so] I like to put a twist on it [with] snakeskin [or cow-print] boots in a cowgirl style." Whether you prefer sleek riding styles or tall cowboy boots, these knee-high options will have you kicking it in style this season.

Meet the Expert

Liz Teich is a New York-based fashion stylist, style creator and on-air style expert. She has more than 15 years of commercial fashion experience with brands like TJ Maxx, Target and ESPN, and has styled celebs like Mike Tyson, Tom Brady, Ashley Graham and the cast of Stranger Things.

How I Chose the Best Knee-High Boots

To cull this list of the best knee-high boots for fall and winter 2024, I first spoke to stylist Liz Teich, who gave me some insight into the trending aesthetics of the season. From there, I polled PureWow editors and looked into my own shoe closet to recommend some styles we wear and love. I also pulled options for a range of body types and tastes, being sure to include fits that work for both wide and narrow calves, short and tall legs (peep the shaft height!), as well as a range of heel heights and types. Additionally, given the seasons in which we typically wear knee-high boots, I considered the materials used and chose boots with durable uppers, including genuine leather, suede and weather-resistant picks.

Best Knee-High Boots Overall

1. Silent D Komass Knee-High Boots

What I Like

  • block heel
  • pull-on design makes them look super sleek

What I Don't Like

  • sizing can be confusing

Silent D

I own the over-the-knee version of this style and they're my *favorite* pair of boots. They have a pull-on design, giving them a sleeker, more streamlined look. I love that the block heels feel supportive and give just enough of a lift without the risk of teetering. The black (faux) suede is my fave, of course, as it instantly makes every outfit feel a little more elevated, but the boots also come in carbon, ivory and sand hues. Reviewers suggest that the style runs a smidge small, so you’ll likely want to size up. Heads up, though: The sizes listed are European, so be sure to double check the chart before you buy. (You won't regret it.)

Best Knee-High Riding Boots

2. Naturalizer Leather Rena Boots

What I Like

  • comfortable footbed
  • available in wide widths
  • wraparound buckle strap details

What I Don't Like

  • toe box can feel snug

Naturalizer

Naturalizer is well known for making supremely comfortable footwear, with special attention paid to the footbed of every pair of shoes. It makes these classic riding boots, complete with buckle accents, that much more comfortable. The style features the brand’s proprietary Contour+ technology, which molds to your foot for a uniquely supportive and comfortable fit—so you can absolutely say these are made for walking. I also appreciate that these boots come in wide widths, too. That said, some reviewers found the toe box ran a bit snug, so you may want to order a half size up for some extra wiggle room, especially if you plan on wearing them with thick socks through winter.

Best Knee-High Platform Boots

3. Steve Madden Berkleigh Boots

What I Like

  • sleek style
  • platform makes them easier to walk in
  • comfortable lining

What I Don't Like

  • may hit too high on those with shorter calves

Steve Madden

Whether you’ve always been into the grunge or punk rock scenes or simply want to embrace your inner Wednesday Addams this season, this vegan leather platform style is a kick-butt pick to add to your rotation. The sole adds 4 inches overall, but the 1-inch platform makes the heel feel closer to 2.5-inches, making it much more comfortable for walking. Just take it from this reviewer, who writes, "I am someone who struggles to walk in heels and these are awesome! Super fun shoes that are amazingly comfortable."

Best Knee-High Cowboy Boots

4. Jeffrey Campbell Suede Finn Western Boots

What I Like

  • genuine leather upper
  • western embroidery
  • low heel

What I Don't Like

  • limited sizing depending on color
  • expensive

Jeffrey Campbell

Ushered in by Beyoncé earlier this year, the Cowboy Core trend is still going strong, and now western wear could even be considered a wardrobe staple—at least for the foreseeable future. I think we can all agree that a good pair of cowboy boots will always look cool, though a knee-high version like this one feels far more fashion-forward than a traditional mid-calf silhouette. Between the monochrome embroidery and very of-the-moment brown suede construction, this Jeffrey Campbell style hits the mark on every front. Better yet, its super low heel should make for easy breezy strolls, two-steps and everything in between. Yee-haw!

Best Two-Tone Knee-High Boots

5. Jack Rogers Leather Adaline Riding Boots

What I Like

  • stylish two-tone design
  • whipstitch detail
  • good for wide calves without too much extra room

What I Don't Like

  • some reviewers say they run small

Jack Rogers

Why choose between black and brown when you can sport both? These Jack Rogers riding boots have a whipstitch detail separating the two hues, and a curved top that hits higher on the outside of the knee, an effect which helps lengthen your legs. There's a full zip closure on the interior side, along with some elastic goring, meaning those with wider calves should have no trouble getting them on. But you don't just have to take my word for it. "I searched hard for a riding boot in a rich leather that comfortably fit my larger-than-average calves. These fit the bill," raves one buyer. "I can easily get them on and off, and there isn't tons of extra space, like some extra-wide-calf boots." However, a few other reviewers do suggest ordering a half size up for a more comfortable fit.

Best Mixed-Media Knee-High Boots

6. LifeStride Glory Boots

What I Like

  • partially made from recycled materials
  • comes in wide width sizing
  • comfortable foam insole

What I Don't Like

  • suede upper can dirty easily

LifeStride

These slouchy boots, featuring a mixed-media shaft of faux suede and leather, have phenomenal reviews—with basically every one commenting on how comfortable they are. That’s in large part because of the foam footbed, which helps ease any stress caused by the 2.75-inch heel. Elise from Chicago writes, “These boots are stunning and so comfortable. The fit is perfect, no rubbing or squeezing my toes. I receive many compliments when I wear these boots and I can wear them all day comfortably.”

Knee-High Boots with the Most Calf Size Options

7. Duo Boots Leather Dalia Boots

What I Like

  • multiple shaft heights available
  • comfy memory foam insole
  • eight different calf sizes available

What I Don't Like

  • expensive

Duo Boots

Whether you're tall or petite, Duo Boots is all about helping you find the perfect fit for your legs with multiple shaft height and calf size options. There’s even a fit quiz that walks you through all the steps to properly measure your calves and determine that sweet spot. As for the upper, it’s made from a gorgeous, supple leather that will only get softer and better over time. The combination of the roughly 2.7-inch heel and almond-shaped toe gives these boots a truly timeless appeal that’s definitely worth the investment.

Best Knee-High Rain Boots

8. Hunter Original Rain Boots

What I Like

  • offers rain protection
  • ample calf width
  • lots of color options

What I Don't Like

  • can be hard to take on and off

Hunter

There are lots of rain-ready Wellies on the market but none are more timeless than Hunter’s tall rain boots. These classic rubber boots have been around since the ‘50s, with innovative new improvements being made all the time. There are a few different shaft heights available, but this tall model is your best bet for keeping out any and all precipitation as you tread through puddles or snow drifts. They’re only available in whole sizes, so I suggest going with the larger if you typically wear a half size. That way you can easily fit in a thick sock or boot liner once temperatures drop. The only downside is that petite folks or those with short legs may find the 16-inch shaft too tall to comfortably wear for long periods of time.

Chic Weather-Resistant Knee-High Boots

9. La Canadienne Leather Miles Boots

What I Like

  • thick, comfy heel
  • memory foam insole
  • weatherproof

What I Don't Like

  • very expensive

La Canadienne

La Canadienne makes gorgeous footwear that can withstand the elements, and the Miles has to be one of my favorite styles. The stretchy Italian leather upper fits multiple calf widths, the 3.5-inch block heel (plus platform) adds some drama without stressing your arches. The waterproof boots have also been treated with the brand’s proprietary City Dry technology, which protects the material from rain and snow. Translation? You can wear these beauties all fall and winter long without worrying about ruining your new favorite shoes. “They’re so comfortable and I love that I don’t feel weird about my shoes if it’s raining in the a.m. but clear and beautiful by midday,” says one PureWow editor.

Best Crocodile Knee-High Boots

10. Reformation Leather Nylah Boots

What I Like

  • sustainable and eco-friendly materials and methods
  • solid block heel

What I Don't Like

  • only two color options

Reformation

Reformation unfortunately doesn’t list the shaft height on these leather croc-style boots, but that hasn’t stopped me from falling head-over-heels for this ‘90s-inspired style. The toe is slightly squared for a throwback look, and the 3-inch stacked heel lengthens your legs without being too high to comfortably walk in. And like all of Reformation’s designs, they’re made using sustainable and eco-friendly methods and materials.

Best Kitten-Heel Knee-High Boots

11. J.Crew Suede Stevie Boots

What I Like

  • shorter heel
  • comes in smooth leather and suede hues
  • slim silhouette

What I Don't Like

  • pull-on style can be tricky over thick layers

J.Crew

If you prefer the look of a thinner heel but aren't in the market for stilettos, a dainty kitten style is the next best thing. These fan-favorite Stevie boots should not disappoint. Available in multiple finishes (including this trendy chocolate suede), they have a pull-on design and slim silhouette, along with a recently updated 2.2-inch heel. According to reviews, they’re worth every penny. Per one buyer, “They are surprisingly easy to put on/take off, and they are very soft on the inside and out, yet they don't sag or look bulky. The little heel is perfect."

Best Lace-Up Knee-High Boots

12. Söfft Sharnell Suede Boots

What I Like

  • suede is water-resistant
  • adjustable laces to fit different calf widths
  • comfortable 2-inch block heel

What I Don't Like

  • laces can loosen over time

Söfft

These sleek suede boots have a 4.7-star rating at Nordstrom, with the number one comment being how wonderful they are for wider calves. The laces up the back are fully adjustable so you can loosen and tighten them for a custom fit (there is also a side zipper to make it easier to get them on and off). Plus, the material is water-resistant so you don’t have to worry about getting caught in unexpected inclement weather. “Love them so much I bought a backup pair in black as well,” writes one reviewer. “I usually wear an 8.5 and that’s what I bought. Initially they were a bit snug but, as suede boots tend to, they loosened up within the first few hours of wearing them.” As a bonus, they're totally in line with the recent boho-chic trend we've been seeing this season.

Best Knee-High Boots for Narrow Calves

13. Loeffler Randall Leather Gia Boots

What I Like

  • sleek, minimalist design
  • great for narrow calves

What I Don't Like

  • not ideal for wider calves
  • expensive

Loeffler Randall

These supremely classic leather boots come with a 2-inch heel that adds just enough height without putting too much stress on your ankles. A great pick for those who appreciate a super-sleek, minimalist silhouette (but perhaps a con for some), the Gia boots have a pull-on fit rather than zippers or laces. But the supple Italian leather won’t have you struggling too much, and will actually get softer and more lovely with each wear. Some reviews also suggest the boot shaft runs a bit narrow, which is good news for those with thinner calves.

Knee-High Boots in Most Unique Colors

14. Larroudé x Jennifer Fisher Leather Boots

What I Like

  • gorgeous color options
  • sleek, pull-on design
  • memory foam insole

What I Don't Like

  • minimal sizes in white and black
  • expensive

Larroudé

To be honest, these boots are more likely to hit mid-knee or even just above on petite frames (unfortunately Larroudé doesn’t list the exact measurements), but the gorgeous leather and even more stunning color options meant I just had to include them. I mean, check out that rich martini green! The cushy memory foam insole helps to balance the 3.8-inch heel, and the leather upper is oh-so supple for extra comfort. If they do end up hitting too high on your leg, you can scrunch the leather of the shaft down for a slouchy look and better fit.

Best Snakeskin Knee-High Boots

15. Schutz Leather Dellia Up Snakeskin Boots

What I Like

  • trendy snakeskin print
  • wider calf
  • low heel

What I Don't Like

  • only one color

Schutz

Embrace your wild side with these tall snakeskin boots from Schutz. It's a way to get a touch of print into your day-to-day monochrome looks without donning a full on snakeskin skirt or jacket. With a thinner mid-block heel, you'll get a 2-inch lift that's comfortable to walk around in for date night or a girls' night out. The 15-inch circumference also helps with pulling them on and off after a long day.

What to Look for in Knee-Height Boots

“Knee height” is obviously a different measurement for every person, so even though all the boots I’ve chosen are listed as “knee-high” boots, it’s still important to double check the shaft height before you buy. (The shaft height is measured from the top of the boot down to the sole.) For boots with a heel, this means that number stops at soon as the tape measure hits the arch of your foot, not all the way to the ground. To see how that number compares to your legs, sit in a chair with your bare feet flat on the ground and your knee positioned at a 90-degree angle. Then, run a tape measure from the back of your knee to the ground.

Remember, when shopping for knee-high boots you likely don’t want something that is the exact same length as your calf, as the top will rub on the back of your knee as you walk or while sitting. Instead, opt for something at least two to three inches shorter to ensure maximum comfort at your joints.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Do I Find the Perfect Knee-High Boots?

Finding the perfect knee-high boots depends on many factors, including your style, heel height preference and calf width. First, you need to decide how tall of a heel you'd like, with most shoes on this list being no higher than 3.5 inches for a good lift that's still comfortable to walk on. Also, note that a kitten heel might be a little more challenging to walk in compared to a block heel. Those with wider calves should also double check the circumference of the boot to ensure they're able to slip in and out of them with ease.

That being said, I picked the Silent D Komass boots as the best overall knee-high boots given their stretchy fabric and versatility. They come in four universal colors, are simple enough to stay in style for years and are comfortable to walk in for work or a night out. Plus, I love them!

How Do You Wear Knee-High Boots Over 40?

In short, you can wear knee-high boots over 40 just as you could at any age. But if you want to keep things age appropriate, sweater dresses and just-above-the-knee skirts look great when paired with tall knee hight boots. To get a little more edgy, you can pair your favorite knee-high boots with a leather jacket for a date night, or wear them over skinny jeans for more casual days out.

Are Knee-High Boots Still on Trend in 2024?

Knee-high boots are a classic that never seem to go out of style. But to stay on trend in 2024, you can look for riding styles, cowboy boots and brown suede that go with the heritage, western and boho trends that have been featured on runways. Additionally, bold prints like snakeskin and crocodile can make this classic style pop.
