The hottest new TikTok trend? It could be braided bungee cord. Or it could be a dangling designer logo. Or it could be both, as well as what’s displayed in the more than 18 thousand posts displaying creators’ “anik-anik,” usually charms hung off their handbags or keychains and inexpensive trinkets saved to be pasted into a journal or repurposed as accessories.

The words are a Filipino term roughly translated as “any-any,” and it basically means trinkets and charms that serve no real purpose (besides sparking joy) and may even be a tiny bit clutter-y. Think a keychain in the shape of a stuffie. Or a tooled-leather dog. Or cherries. Or a wine glass.

I’m all in on the concept, since it’s the perfect Venn diagram bullseye of the bag charms trend, Sonny Angels fandom and the scrapbooking comeback. Think of this as  “loud garbage,” an anti-quiet luxury aesthetic that embraces exuberant colors, layered accessories and frankly, a pinch of bad taste. According to Tiktok creator girlbossinred, displaying these things signals to onlookers that “you’re an anik-anik girlie, you’re creative, you’re expressive.” Sign me up!

Here are five fun ways to hop on the anik-anik trend. After all: More is more!

1. Bag Charms

I like to choose items that reflect my current interests for my bag charms, rather than just opting for a standard set of charms. I made a big deal of Christmas this year, so I hung a bungee-cord tree from my bag. And I’m always needing quarters for a leaky tire I’m too slothful to get patched, so I ordered a bluebird-of-happiness leather coin purse to keep a supply on hand. As for the scarf? It’s old and tattered, but I remember the party where my friend and I got them as gifts whenever I look at it.

2. Junk Journaling

Ever since I got a tiny Kodak instant printer, I love popping out a pic or two to paste in my journal when I’m traveling. I also love sketching in my journal and choosing special stickers from bougie makers John Derian and Natalie Lete that are decidedly grown-up. My absolute favorite thing to do is paste watercolors I did while traveling in my junk journal.

3. Keychains

I finally sprang for a keychain because my keys were always getting lost around the house (in all the clutter, okay?). I opted for one of the long bungee cord models I see crafted everywhere now, and added a leather horse charm to it. I like letting the messy cluster dangle out of my pocket as an accessory.

4. Sneaker Charms

My next big tacky drama is going all in on sneaker charms. (To my fellow PureWow editors who previously worked this trend in Crocs, #respect.) I’ve already started swapping out my standard-issue laces for bungee cord and eyeing some old costume jewelry I’m going to take apart and put on my sneaks. And some of the cute laces-and-pendants sets I see at retailers are irresistible.

5. Gifting

What’s more fun than enjoying anik-anik myself? Stocking up on items to gift to family members and friends, of course. Granted, so far I’ve only had the courage to give Sonny Angels and little keychains to college- and elementary-school girls and gays, but I’m hoping some of the more tasteful grown-ass women in my cohort will soon enjoy festooning their tasteful minimalist lives with garish Asian stuffies and neon lanyards. Because life is short, but my log of Etsy purchases need not be.
