Whether you’re going for streamlined city chic, cool-girl Wednesday Addams or simply looking for ease, an all-black winter outfit is a wonderfully easy way to look stylishly put-together with minimal effort. While it’ll never go out of style, this year, you can expect to see a doubling-down on the monochrome outfit, thanks to Valentino’s FW24 collection that hit runways earlier this year.

However, great execution hangs on styling. (Hint: Follow the CST rule.) Because, unfortunately, simply piling on all the black items in your wardrobe does run the risk of turning you into an amorphous blob rather than a sleek head-to-toe look. Luckily, we’ve compiled a list of some of the best no-fail, all-black outfit combos to wear all winter long, and chances are you already have at least some similar pieces in your closet. If you really want to nail this year’s all-black winter outfit trend, you’ll lean hard into tailoring—menswear is having a moment. Now all that’s left to do is choose which look to try first…

6 Winter Date Night Outfits That Are So Easy to Copy

1. Textured Sweater + Loose Denim + Contrasting Sneakers

A cable knit or otherwise textured sweater will pop against plain denim better than smooth cashmere. That said, sometimes you really do need a splash of contrasting color to keep things fresh. Opt for white, gray or even dark green comfy sneakers to prevent your loose-fit jeans from looking sloppy.

2. Cape Sweater + Fringe Maxi Dress + Metallic Accent

Flip through the Fashion Week photos, and it feels like fringe is *everywhere* right now. (Boho chic is back, baby.) The key to making any monochrome look work (especially in darker hues) is to mix up the fabrics, and Julianne Hough does it well, pairing a cozy (but sleek) cape sweater with a fringe maxi dress that adds texture and movement. I also love how she accessorizes her outfit with a black clutch that has a metallic pop.

3. Suit + Sweater + Contrasting Blouse and Shoes

Rather than wearing a matching wool blazer and trousers, you can try swapping in a leather or silk jacket instead. But if you’re dying for a matching black two-piece, adding small pops of color is another way to give some definition. Brighter shades obviously work better than dark navy or gray, but you don’t have to stick to neutrals only. A bright pink, icy blue or even a print will also work.

4. Oversized Blazer + Silk Slip Dress + Contrasting Accessories

One of the great things about an oversized blazer is that you can dress it up or down. I love what Brooke Shields did, pairing her deep-V blazer with a shiny silk dress. By choosing a slimmer cut, she balances the proportions of the blazer while giving the outfit movement. (Also take note of how she rolled up the sleeves to prevent the feeling of being swallowed by the fabric.) Matching the shoes and clutch tie the look together and provide a little visual interest without stealing the spotlight from the clothes.

5. Short-Sleeve Sweater + Wide-Leg Trousers

Another cute balancing act, this combo actually works beautifully with any mix of colors or patterns. The knit material offers just enough volume to be proportionate with a wide-leg silhouette (leather or not), while elbow-length sleeves offer warmth without looking bulky. Bookmark this one to repeat with all your favorite sweaters and trousers.

6. Leather Trench + Knee-High Boots

If layering makes you feel claustrophobic, take some inspo from supermodel Gisele Bündchen, who proves that you can have a complete outfit with just shoes and a coat. Feel free to play with textures and try a cotton trench, or, should you want leather all the way, don’t be afraid to pick a pair of embossed boots or play with the leather finishes.

7. Mid-Length Jacket + Leggings + Tall Boots

Black leggings and a matching black sweatshirt may work for the weekends, but for days when you need to dress to impress you’ll need something a bit more posh. Slip on some knee-high boots and layer a booty-covering jacket (like a blazer or tweed style) over top. The result is more equestrian-chic and less “headed to the gym.”

8. Oversized Blazer + Bodysuit + Stilettos

After years of wide-leg pants, expect slimmer silhouettes to come back around, as previewed this year, on the runways of Chanel, Fendi and Céline. Sure, you may not want bodysuit tight, but don’t be afraid to opt for a straight leg cut. It’ll also balance the oversized blazer. Bonus points if your jumpsuit has monochromatic patterns that add texture. And petites, take note. This leggy look, accentuated by a good pair of pointy toe heels, is the perfect height boost.

9. Teddy Coat + T-Shirt + Leather Pants

The ultimate cold-weather fabric combo, cozy sherpa fleece and warm faux-leather will keep you toasty on even the chilliest winter nights. P.S. We suggest you opt for a slim-fit T-shirt or thinner knit to offset voluminous wide-leg pants and an oversize coat.

10. Classic Jacket + Textured Dress

Don’t save your fringed frocks or sequin minis for special occasions only. Adding a tailored jacket over the top instantly gives stand-out, party-ready styles a more casual vibe so you can get more use out of those specialty items.
