This New Eddie Murphy Flick Has Surpassed a Best Picture Nom to Become the #1 Movie on Netflix

Just last week, the 2023 Oscar nominations were announced, and one of Netflix's originals, All Quiet on the Western Front (2022), was nominated for the highly-esteemed Best Picture prize. However, while that movie is currently sitting in Netflix's list of most-watched movies, it was just surpassed by a movie that only came out two days ago: You People.

You People features an all-star cast, including Eddie Murphy, Jonah Hill, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Lauren London, Nia Long, David Duchovny and more. And it seems this star power has helped the film to jump to number-one, passing other titles like Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery and Bullet Train.

The romantic comedy tells the story of Ezra (Hill) and Amira (London), an interracial couple who hit it off after an accidental meeting and then begin to seriously date. However, when they introduce each other to their families, things get complicated due to the difference between their cultures and their backgrounds.

In PureWow's review of the film, Senior Editor Greta Heggeness gave the flick 4.5 out of 5 stars and wrote, “You People features an ideal mix of humor and entertainment, even though it tackles a heavy topic.” She also said, “The on-screen banter between Murphy and Hill is comedy gold.”

You People was directed by Kenya Barris, who is perhaps best known as the creator, director and executive producer of Black-ish. Barris has also written for hit shows like Girlfriends and movies like Girls Trip.

Meanwhile, Barris co-wrote the screenplay for You People with Hill, who also acted as a producer on the film.

With so many comedy legends in one movie, we can totally see why it's already dominating the Netflix charts.
