Aside from the memorable commercials that aired during the 2024 Super Bowl, viewers were also treated to exclusive trailer releases for upcoming movies headed to theaters this year. During game night, audiences had a chance to watch the official trailer for part one of the new Wicked movie, which stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo as Glinda the Good Witch and Elphaba the eventual-Wicked Witch of the West, respectively.

The one-minute teaser starts with Elphaba (Erivo) walking through the Emerald City of Oz and she’s met with judgmental stares by the residents. While dressed in her signature black attire, Elphaba walks up to Glinda (Grande), who is startled to see her. “You’re green!” Glinda says. With a smile, Elphaba replies, “I am.”

The rest of the trailer teases what’s to come in the film, from Elphaba and Glinda forming a close bond to the Wizard’s (played by Jeff Goldblum) big secret. “Don’t be afraid,” Glinda tells her dear friend. “I’m not afraid,” Elphaba reveals. “It’s the Wizard that should be afraid of me.”

Directed by Jon M. Chu, who’s worked on films like Crazy Rich Asians and In the Heights, the Wicked movie (which will be split into two parts) centers around the witches’ backstories, as well as their contrasting personalities. Serving as a prequel to the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz, Wicked draws inspiration from Gregory Maguire’s novel of the same name and the Broadway musical.

Alongside Grande, Erivo and Goldblum, the star-studded cast of Wicked features other notable names such as Jonathan Bailey and Michelle Yeoh.

Don’t forget to mark your calendars: Part one of Wicked hits theaters on Thanksgiving Day.
