‘Wicked’ Movie Director Reveals the Musical Adaptation Will Be Split into Two Films

Get excited, fellow Wicked fans, because we’re getting not one but *two* movies coming exclusively to theaters.

Earlier today, director Jon M. Chu posted a special news update pertaining to the movie adaptation of the beloved Broadway musical, Wicked. In the open letter (posted to his official Twitter account), he revealed plans for the highly anticipated film.

First, he thanked fans for all of their support of the upcoming movie. Then, he shared that there will be two film installments of the mythical story. Chu shared that they simply couldn’t “wrestle the story of Wicked into a single film without doing some real damage to it.” He went on to say that they decided to “give ourselves a bigger canvas” and make two movies instead.

He ended the letter by saying the first film will be released in December 2024, with the second one premiering a year later.

For those who are unaware, Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo will perform as the film’s leads. They will play the roles of Glinda and Elphaba, respectively. Inspired by the novel and 1939 film, Wicked (also a book) centers around the witches’ backstories, as well as their contrasting personalities.

Could 2024 come any faster, please?
