The One 'Golden Bachelorette' Contestant I'm Rooting For

Hear me out

The Golden Bachelorette cast

"I'm 66 years old, but I look like 36."

It's easily one of my favorite lines from the first episode of The Golden Bachelorette. What makes it even better is that it was delivered by the most lovable and charming 66-year-old named Charles L.—a retired data analyst and widower who's embarking on a new quest to find love with Joan Vassos. He's a proud father of two, he's funny (and he knows it) and he values commitment, as evidenced by his 36-year marriage with his late wife.

I watched his story and closely observed his first moments with Joan in episode one, and I just couldn't help but develop a soft spot for the guy. He was incredibly polite, totally at ease (and, dare I say, gentle) in his interactions with the bachelorette. But the icing on the cake? When he reminded Joan to prioritize her journey in this wild process of finding the right partner.

Before they parted ways, he looked Joan in the eyes and said, "This is your journey to find love...It's our journey, but Charles is not in charge. Joan, you are in charge."

I don't know about you, but I love the fact that he encouraged and empowered Joan, rather than trying to make himself stand out and look good. This gave him major humility points in my book, and it already showed me that he would be Joan's biggest cheerleader—even if it means letting her have the spotlight.

Another standout moment that made me root for Charles? His raw honesty with Joan, when he opened up about one of his biggest struggles after losing his wife. He was candid with Joan about how it made him feel, and how a single detail had been haunting him for years—until Guy came along to help him process it healthily. That shows me that he's not afraid to be vulnerable—which is a solid (and honestly, kind of refreshing) quality to see in older men.

Lastly, I really like that Charles L. hasn't pushed for a lot of PDA. While he has definitely acknowledged Joan's beauty, it appears that he's putting a bit more value on their emotional and intellectual compatibility, which I totally respect. He's simply enjoying the ride. He's taking his time. And, as he communicated before, it's Joan who ultimately gets to decide how this connection goes.

Now, do I think he stands a chance at winning the final rose? Well...I'll have to wait and see. Compared to his competitors, it doesn't seem like he's in the lead—at least compared to the front runners who've gone on one-on-one dates and established deeper connections with Joan (like Chock and Pascal). Even so, I've seen enough green flags to say I'm proudly rooting for Charles L. And even if he doesn't get that final rose, I'm pretty sure he'll capture the heart of another lucky lady.
