There’s no question that Randall and Beth on This Is Us have become an iconic TV couple. However, Sterling K.Brown’s relationship with real-life college sweetheart Ryan Michelle Bathe may give the fictional pair a run for their money. From their cute moments on the red carpet to their playful IG posts with their kids, the duo are true couple goals. Here, everything you need to know about Sterling K. Brown’s wife, Ryan Michelle Bathe.
Who Is Sterling K. Brown’s Wife, Ryan Michelle Bathe? A Closer Look at the ‘Endgame’ Star
1. Who Is Sterling K. Brown’s Wife, Ryan?
Ryan Michelle Bathe is a successful actress who has appeared on ER, Girlfriends and How I Met Your Mother. She’s also had major roles on Boston Legal, Trauma, Empire and First Wives Club.
Bathe also had the opportunity to work with her husband (just not in the same scenes) on Army Wives and appeared on This Is Us as Yvette. Recently, she starred in Sylvie’s Love, which was nominated for Best Television Movie at the 2021 Emmys. Now, she plays FBI Special Agent Val Turner on the NBC crime drama series, The Endgame.
Brown (who’s also nominated for two Emmy Awards) told PureWow that they’ll walk the red carpet together. “My lovely wife Ryan Michelle Bathe will be right there with me,” he said. “Her movie Sylvie’s Love is nominated for Best Television Movie, so that’s pretty frigging awesome, as well.”
2. How Did They Meet?
Brown and Bathe both attended Stanford University in 1998. They lived in the same dorm and even starred in campus productions together.
"I saw Sterling audition for Joe Turner’s Come and Gone. We were both freshmen in college," Bathe recalled to People. "I snuck in and I saw his audition, and I thought to myself, ‘If this man can do this at 17 years old, my God. What could he do when he becomes a grown man?’" OK, how sweet is this?
They quickly became friends, riding bikes to rehearsals and bonding over both being from St. Louis (and even being born in the same hospital). Soon their friendship became a relationship. They dated through college, but their relationship wasn’t always perfect. The duo broke up for three-and-a-half years before reconnecting when Brown tried to win her back.
"The multitude of ups and downs that we went through before we finally got together and figured it out," Brown told ET. "[We] have been together solid since April 2004, [but] all the stuff that happened before that it’s a good movie."
3. When Did They Get Married?
In 2007, the couple tied the knot in Durham, North Carolina.
"I love actors so much I decided to marry one," Brown said during his acceptance speech at the 2018 SAG Awards. "Ryan Michelle Bathe, you’re the best scene partner a brother’s ever had."
4. Do They Have Kids?
The couple has two sons together, Andrew and Amaré. Bathe actually had a pretty similar experience as Beth on This Is Us when it came to giving birth to Andrew (and we wonder if Brown gave a detail or two to the writers).
She had such a quick labor that Bathe ended up giving birth at home with Brown helping her deliver their son. Talk about a TV scene come to life. He even tried reenacting the scene on Live with Kelly & Ryan.
