If real people were thrown into the Squid Game arena, how far would they go for $4.56 million? Well, we’re about to find out.
Netflix Drops Trailer for Real-Life ‘Squid Game’ Competition Show & It’s Eerily Similar to the Scripted Series
Let the games begin
Netflix just released the first official trailer for Squid Game: The Challenge, which is a reality show based on the streaming service’s popular series. Not only will the contestants endure Squid Game-inspired competitions, but they will also compete for the biggest prize in television history.
The brand-new trailer confirms that the arena is nearly identical to the scripted show, featuring the labyrinth of stairways, the rows of bunk beds and the animatronic doll, Young-hee. The games are also taken directly from the O.G. series, including the Red Light/Green Light competition.
Of course, it’s important to note that the players don’t die when they’re eliminated (like in the show). In Squid Game: The Challenge, each contestant is wearing an ink pack on their chest, which explodes when/if they fail. Phew!
Netflix previously teased the spin-off last month when it released a teaser for Squid Game: The Challenge. The clip (see above) begins with a montage of scenes showing the Squid Game control center coming back to life. “Attention, players,” a masked man says. “You will now compete for our biggest cash prize in reality show history.”
The clip goes on to show the real-life players entering the arena. Although the stakes are high, there’s only one thing on their minds: the cash prize.
“People do a whole lot worse for a whole lot less,” one person says.
The competition show was inspired by Squid Game, which premiered on Netflix back in 2021. The story follows a man who’s so desperate for cash, he enters a Hunger Games-like competition where players compete until there’s one person standing. If they lose, they die. (FYI, the scripted series is returning for season two.)
Squid Game: The Challenge will premiere on November 22, just in time for Thanksgiving weekend.
