The first two episodes of Shrinking season two are now streaming on Apple TV+. With new episodes dropping every Wednesday, there’s no better time to revisit the Jason Segel-led series

The first season of Shrinking follows Jimmy (Jason Segel) and his attempt to get past the initial stages of grief after his wife, Tia (Lilan Bowden), tragically passed away. This includes reconnecting with his daughter, Alice (Lukita Maxwell), who’s also trying to move on.

Season two further explores the grieving process, especially now that Jimmy is ready to move forward after accepting his loss. Although he’s starting to date again, he’s struggling to forget about his late wife because she’s everywhere.

She’s reflected in Alice, who’s worried about Jimmy’s ongoing wellbeing. She’s honored by her family, who are trying to move on while still respecting her legacy. And she’s remembered by her best friend, Gaby (Jessica Williams), who’s now dating Jimmy. (#Awkward)

It’s obvious that Jimmy is determined to get back to the “basics” in order to get the fresh start he needs. My only concern is that his storyline will become redundant as he goes through the same motions as he did in season one.

Luckily, there’s always Paul (Harrison Ford), who never ceases to make me smile even in the most serious moments. Paul is finally ready to be in a committed relationship with Julie (Wendie Malick), and he even drops the “L” bomb. But how long will it last?

Oh, and the tension between Gaby and Liz (Christa Miller) is bound to hit a breaking point. There’s only so much Liz can do to keep Gaby away from Jimmy without facing the consequences. I don’t want to get my hopes up, but I expect a public confrontation that makes Liz’s surprise drop-in to Gaby’s classroom seem minor.

I must note that it’s important to refresh your memory on what happened in season one because the new episodes dive right into the drama without recapping the previous installment. Yes, everyone looks familiar, but it’s hard to remember the exact details when more than a year has passed since the season one finale aired.

For example, if you’d asked me how Grace tried to kill her husband when I started the new season, I’d probably respond with, “Who’s Grace?” But after a brief refresher, I soon remembered that Grace is Jimmy’s patient with an abusive husband. You know, the one who pushed her husband off a cliff in the season one finale.

Shrinking season two has a lot to live up to. But based on what I’ve seen, I have high hopes for what’s to come, especially from the scene-stealing Harrison Ford.
