How Sarah Michelle Gellar *Really* Feels About a Potential Buffy Reboot

We are living in the age of reboots and, I confess, I have mixed feelings about it. On one hand, there are solid revivals that not only cater to nostalgia, but also introduce fresh concepts while challenging viewers to reconsider their views of the past (like Cobra Kai). Then, there are the copy-and-paste remakes that don't hold a candle to the original. (Ahem, Gossip Girl.) Perhaps this is why Sarah Michelle Gellar initially dismissed the idea of reprising her famous character, Buffy Summers, in a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot. But now, it sounds like the actress is having second thoughts.

Earlier this month, during her appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, the Dexter: Original Sin star revealed that she's now open to revisiting the Buffyverse. She told Barrymore, “It’s funny. I always used to say no, because it’s in its bubble, and it’s so perfect. But watching Sex and the City [sequel series, And Just Like That] and seeing Dexter [Orignal Sin], and realizing there are ways to do it, definitely does get your mind thinking, 'Well, maybe.'”

Gellar also hinted that the show's potential return could be a spin-off, rather than a reboot or a prequel. She continued, “It could be anything. It’s a universe. And it makes you realize that in this world, we need those heroes, I think, more so than ever.”

For a solid seven seasons, Gellar embodied one of my favorite heroines—a multifaceted teen who slayed demons and witches while rocking the most stylish outfits. So yes, I'll admit, it's encouraging to hear that she's open to reprising her iconic role.

In previous interviews, the actress said that she wasn't open to doing any reboots. Per MovieWeb, she told SFX Magazine in 2022, "I am very proud of the show that we created and it doesn’t need to be done. We wrapped that up."

However, Gellar also clarified that it would be a great opportunity for someone else to take the mantle. She added, "I am all for them continuing the story because there’s the story of female empowerment. I love the way the show was left: ‘Every girl who has the power can have the power.’ It’s set up perfectly for someone else to have the power...The metaphors of Buffy were the horrors of adolescence. I think I look young, but I am not an adolescent."

Gellar's latest comments come several months after Dolly Parton—a producer of the original series—confirmed that a reboot is underway. She told Business Insider, "They’re still working on that. They’re thinking about bringing it back and revamping it."

Here's hoping I get to see Gellar back in action.
