After winning a well-deserved Academy Award for his performance in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, Robert Downey Jr. is now in the running for an Emmy Award, thanks to his incredible portrayal of Claude in The Sympathizer. PureWow's Senior Editor, News and Entertainment, Greta Heggeness, wrote in her review, "One of the biggest takeaways is Robert Downey Jr.’s unbelievable performance. The actor, 58, is nearly unrecognizable in the role, including everything from his receding hairline to his unique accent."

Several other critics have praised the actor's standout performance, but I imagine that no one is prouder of the actor than his wife, Susan Downey.

The happy couple have been married for nearly two decades, and Robert has been quite vocal about his wife's unwavering support. Following his victory at the Golden Globes, he said in his acceptance speech, "Speaking of motivators, my primary caregiver right there, Susan Downey, she has literally made an art out of extracting me from my comfort zones that I need to feel safe. But she's easy on the eyes, so whatevs."

As it turns out, there's more to Susan than meets the eye, and she has collaborated with her husband on a few occasions. Keep reading for all the details on Robert Downey Jr.’s wife.

1. Who Is Robert Downey Jr.'s Wife, Susan Downey?

Susan Downey is a film producer who previously served as co-president of Dark Castle Entertainment and executive vice president of production at Silver Pictures, Joel Silver's production company. After pursuing a degree at the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts, she got her start at Threshold Entertainment, where she spearheaded the production of several projects.

While at Silver Pictures, Susan produced well-known films like Gothika, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, The Book of Eli, Whiteout and Orphan. However, she has since stepped down to launch a new production company, called Team Downey, with her husband Robert. By then, the pair had already collaborated on films like Sherlock HolmesIron Man 2 and Due Date.

In 2022, the husband and wife duo made headlines with Sr., an emotional documentary that explores the relationship between Robert Downey Jr. and his father, Robert Downey Sr. While discussing the film, which was produced by Team Downey, Susan told The Hollywood Reporter, “[Robert Downey Sr.] was already actively looking to be engaged and to have a project to be doing, so I think that helped. Then the second thing, which you all see in the movie, is that pretty quickly, it didn’t matter what we wanted, this was his way to do that. He ended up participating because he had the way he was willing to participate, which again, now in reflection, makes sense. After all, this is a guy who always communicated through his movies, much more than ever articulating any responses. To do it by making a movie or his version of it, it just kind ends up making sense.”

2. How Did They Meet?

The pair first met on the set of Gothika in 2003. Susan was producing for Dark Castle Entertainment, while Robert starred in the film as Dr. Pete Graham. Susan told Harper's Bazaar, "The main thing I remember about meeting him was thinking how strange he was."

However, after working with him for a few weeks, her perception of him started to change. Robert made the first move and asked her out, which then led to a romantic relationship.

Susan said, "I think he saw what we had. There was something magical there, something we couldn't put our finger on. He always says that we became this third thing when we got together—something that neither of us could have become by ourselves—and I think that's true."

Robert agreed, adding, "There's something about her that is so pure and...right. But then there's the other stuff too, the shadowy side of her that is delightful and that she shows only to me."

He continued, "I guess the only way to explain it is that I've become more like her. I'm still trying to figure out what happened. Whatever I was hungry for when I met Susan, I couldn't have known how much more satisfying what I got would be."

3. When Did Robert Downey Jr. & Susan Downey Get Married?

While chatting with Newsweek, Robert revealed that he proposed to his wife exactly one minute before her 30th birthday. He told the outlet, "I figured I kind of wanted to get her while she was still in her 20s."

On August 27, 2005, the couple had a glamorous Hamptons ceremony in New York, featuring serenades by Sting and Billy Joel. (NBD.) To celebrate their 17-year anniversary, the actor and his wife recreated a sweet wedding photo. He wrote, "Today marks 17 years of unadulterated marital bliss. Susan, you are my bedrock, touchstone and lucky stars to boot." One year later, he shared the same throwback pic in honor of their 18th year together and wrote, "18 years, love still in bloom!!"

4. Is Susan Downey on Social Media?

It appears that Susan Downey is not on social media, likely because she prefers to keep her personal life private. However, the producer continues to make several appearances on her husband's Instagram feed. For example, in April, the actor shared highlights from a private celebration with the cast and crew of HBO's The Sympathizer, and it featured footage of his wife.

5. Have They Walked the Red Carpet Together?

From movie premieres to award shows, the happy couple has attended several red carpet events. Most recently, the pair stepped out together for HBO's The Sympathizer Red Carpet Premiere Event, the 96th Annual Academy Awards and the 10th Annual Breakthrough Prize Ceremony. Given their many red carpet appearances, I'm predicting the couple will also make a joint appearance at this year's Emmys ceremony.

6. Do They Have Children?

Susan and Robert share two children. They welcomed their son, Exton, in February 2012 and their daughter, Avri, in November 2014.

Soon after Susan gave birth to Exton, Robert opened up about his parenting philosophy. He told Esquire (per The Huffington Post), “Do I want to be a hero to my son? No. I would like to be a very real human being. That’s hard enough. [Hero] to me is not applicable to the human experience.”

Additionally, when Avri was born, Robert celebrated the occasion with a humorous Facebook announcement. He wrote, "After 9 months of intensive development, Team Downey is pleased to announce our 2014 fall/winter project. Principal photography commenced 11-14 and will continue until she says, 'Dad! You are embarrassing me...I'm 30, this has gotta stop.'"

7. What Else Have Robert Downey Jr. & Susan Downey Said About Each Other?

In April 2024, when Downey spoke with Esquire in April, he revealed that they took regular walks on the beach during the pandemic. He revealed that they'd spend time “trying to figure out where we’re at, what’s pissing us off, what are we afraid of, what do we want, what will bring us closer together, how do we measure ourselves against relationships that we define as exemplary and not be repeaters or over-emulate? How do we want to shape our life?”

In the same interview, Susan said, “I would never be who I am without him in my life. His trajectory is just the easier one to chart because he’s had to live his ups and downs in public. When we met, we were fortunate that he was in a place where he was open to do things differently than he had historically. But you know what? So was I.”

8. Was Robert Downey Jr. Previously Married?

The actor was previously married to Deborah Falconer, a singer, model and actress. They got married in 1992 and welcomed a son named Indio (29) in 1993. (FYI, he's now a musician and actor.) However, the pair split up in 2004. According to People, Falconer filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences.
