Reese Witherspoon Says ‘Legally Blonde 3’ Is Still Happening & It’s Inspired By *This* Popular Movie

Don’t worry, Legally Blonde fans: the third movie is coming. And not only that, star and producer Reese Witherspoon says one highly successful sequel gave her some much-needed inspiration.

In a recent interview, The Morning Show star revealed that she was inspired by the box-office success of Top Gun: Maverick. Witherspoon explained that the film's nostalgic storytelling sparked an idea or two for the Legally Blonde sequel.

“I’m still hoping that Legally Blonde 3 is gonna come together in the right way,” Witherspoon exclusively told USA Today. “It’s just like Top Gun: They waited a long time to make another version of that movie, and I loved the nostalgia piece they incorporated in it.”

She continued, “So definitely that gave us a lot of inspiration about what we would want to do with Elle Woods and make sure that we had all those same touchstones that mattered to people (back) then. I feel like these characters are my friends, so I safeguard them. I would never make the subpar, mediocre version of their story.”

Back in 2018, Witherspoon confirmed that she would reprise her role as Elle Woods in Legally Blonde 3. Originally, the film was supposed to be released in May 2022. But, due to some creative changes, the movie has been pushed back.

Earlier this year, Mindy Kaling (who is co-writing the script) sat down with E! News to share some details about the sequel. Though she didn’t reveal much about the plot, she did confirm the new installment will feature a lot of new faces.

“There’s definitely gonna be a lot of new faces in the movie,” she told the outlet. “Reflecting the world as it is now is something that’s really important to Reese, and so having there be like diversity is super, super important. You can definitely count on that.”

Keeping our fingers crossed for more Legally Blonde 3 updates.
