The PureWow Entertainment Rating System: Where We Help You Decide What's Worth Watching

header

So you've noticed a new addition to our latest entertainment reviews called the "PureWow Rating." You're probably thinking: Wait, since when did PureWow start adding ratings to their reviews? What exactly do they mean?

Well, allow us to introduce you to our brand-new rating system for TV shows and movies, where we offer our honest star rating on a scale of one to five—one being the worst and five being "you absolutely have to see this, ASAP." But before we get into the full breakdown of how these ratings are determined, a few basic things:

1. What's the goal of the rating system?

In short, it's an easy way to gauge whether or not a certain film or series is worth your time. While our reviews already do an amazing job of breaking this down in detail, we thought it would be helpful to add an official rating to clarify where we stand in terms of a movie's overall quality (from writing and character development to costume design and cinematography).

2. Will these ratings change how reviews are written?

Not at all! The PureWow team will continue to share their honest thoughts about the latest and greatest titles. The only difference is that each review will now include a PureWow Rating, along with a concise summary for why we gave these ratings.

3. What if you disagree?

That's okay! Of course, it's worth noting that a 2-star rating, doesn't mean that no one else will enjoy it. We like to acknowledge that different people's interests are a huge factor when it comes to determining what's worth watching (so yes, you will definitely find articles where we rave about content that critics or some viewers hate—and vice versa).

See below for a full breakdown of PureWow's rating system for movies and TV shows.

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ = Oscar-worthy

This movie or TV series is a must-see because of its brilliant execution and profound impact. Simply put, it’s a masterpiece that deserves all the recognition and awards.

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ 1/2 = Really Good

This film (or show) stands out as one of the stronger works that we've seen because the storyline is genuinely entertaining and its themes are thought-provoking, but there are minor things that could've been improved upon. We wouldn’t call this “perfect,” but it comes very, very close.

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ = Good

There's a good chance we'd recommend this to our friends. While the performances, the writing and the overall plot are all good enough to keep our attention from start to finish, we've definitely seen better.

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ 1/2 = Promising

Perhaps it had the potential to be Oscar-worthy and it fell devastatingly short, or maybe it just didn't leave a strong enough impression for us to rave about it. While it has a few plusses, it’s just OK.

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ = Mediocre

In other words, it’s decent enough to keep us engaged for most of the time, but there are a lot of things that could've used some improvement.

⭐ ⭐ = Disappointing

It’s pretty bad, but there’s at least one redeeming quality that makes it deserving of that second star, whether it be a lead actor’s brilliant performance or that clever one-liner we just can’t quit thinking about.

⭐ = Not Worth Our Time

This is, by far, one of the worst things we have ever seen. It's awfully written and very poorly executed with zero redeeming qualities. We wouldn’t recommend this to anyone.
