1. Kidman and Bullock Will Reprise Their Roles
When it comes to Hollywood, speculation is the name of the game—and projects can be dropped in an instant. Take, for instance, "Rules of Magic." In 2019, Variety reported that MAX (formerly HBO Max) had ordered a pilot based on Hoffman's books, Rules of Magic and Practical Magic, set in 1960s New York City. The storyline was to follow Franny Jet and Vincent Owens—the former two being Gillian and Sally's aunts in the original film. Unfortunately, that project never got off the ground.
However, Kidman did confirm in an exclusive interview with People that Practical Magic 2 is happening. Warner Bros. also confirmed that the sequel was officially in development via Instagram.
"Yes I will be in it. And Sandy will be in it. And that's that," Kidman said during a press tour for her film, A Family Affair, which premiered on Netflix in June. "There's a lot more to tell which is why we go, 'OK, this is kind of interesting now to be able to do this.'"
Fans first speculated that there would be sequel after MAX announced that Practical Magic was available to stream, People reported. The midnight reveal seemed to nod to the famous "midnight margarita" scene, in which Bullock revealed that the pair had, indeed, been tipsy. Both actresses will return in their roles from the 1998 cult classic as Gillian Owens (Kidman) and older sister Sally Owens (Bullock). Per People, both will also executive produce.
2. The Script Will Be Based Off of The Book of Magic
Author Alice Hoffman's novel, Practical Magic, served as the basis for the first film. Now, the sequel, The Book of Magic, will be adapted for the silver screen. According to producer Denise Di Novi, the plot will be faithful to the book.
“I think [fans are] going to be very pleased. We’re going to be very faithful. We’re cognizant to how important those characters and that movie are to so many people. We’re not going to reinvent the wheel," Di Novi told Entertainment Weekly. “We’re going to draw from Alice Hoffman’s books, as the first movie did, and we’re going to be true to the chronology of how many years later it is."
3. What I Know About the Cast and Plot
Practical Magic starred Bullock, Kidman, Goran Visnjic (Jimmy Angelov), Stockard Channing (Frances Owens), Dianne Wiest (Jet Owens), Aidan Quinn (Gary Hallet) and Evan Rachel Wood (Kylie Owens). Though Bullock and Kidman will reprise their roles, the remainder of the cast is unconfirmed. "We’re not 100 percent sure which characters will return," Di Novi told Entertainment Weekly. "[We will] be respectful to the characters, story and locations," saying that the production would be faithful both to the first film and Hoffman's novel.
4. Practical Magic 2 Release Date
There's no set date, but Di Novi tells Entertainment Weekly, “It’s going to be in 2025, but I’m not exactly sure when. We’re just beginning the script, and Akiva Goldsman, who worked on the original and ten million things since then, is writing the script.”
