Netflix has become known for canceling shows without giving them a proper ending. Whether it’s an underrated gem like The Nun or the enticing teen drama The Society, we wish these series were given another chance. And now, a number of viewers are hoping that the streaming service might bring back the “gone-too-soon” comedy series starring the one and only Drew Barrymore: Santa Clarita Diet.

Last week, a user on Twitter shared a series of photos from the show and captioned the post, “The perfect cast….. just gone.” Instantly, the comments section was flooded with similar remarks, including calls for the show to be brought back from cancelation. One fan shared the same sentiment, commenting, “This show was gone way too soon!!”

In case you’re unfamiliar with the series, Santa Clarita Diet follows a married couple named Sheila (Barrymore) and Joel (Timothy Olyphant). Working as realtors, they are trying to raise their teenage daughter in Santa Clarita, California. However, Sheila experiences a traumatic, life-changing event that sends her family down a destructive path: Sheila becomes a zombie and her family must work together to hide her secret “illness.”

Alongside Barrymore and Olyphant, who also served as executive producers for the series, Santa Clarita Diet starred Liv Hewson as Abby, Skyler Gisondo as Eric, Natalie Morales as Anne Garcia, Mary Elizabeth Ellis as Lisa, Nathan Fillion as Gary West and Joel McHale as Chris.

However, after three seasons, the streaming service canceled the show in April 2019 (despite the previous season ending on a huge cliffhanger). Though the reason behind the show’s cancellation remains unclear, it was speculated that the series ended due to Netflix’s “cost-plus” budget model, which pays money for a show’s production in advance.

At the time, Cindy Holland (Netflix’s Head of Original Content) told Deadline: “It’s a combination of things. When we’re investing, we decide how much to invest based on the audience that will show up. If the audience doesn’t show up, we think about the reason to continue to invest in something that doesn’t do as well as we had hoped.”

Considering the amount of time that has passed since the show ended, it seems highly unlikely that Netflix would bring Santa Clarita Diet back. But hey, at least we can dream, right?
